Fresh, dried, frozen or kept in a preserving liquid: choosing the heading
The state of the goods often decides the heading. Ask first how the goods are kept. This is the core of fresh fruit classification and of any dried fruit HS code search.
Headings 0807 to 0810 take fresh fruit only. Headings 0803 to 0806 take fresh or dried fruit together, so read the code text. Grapes show the split well, because fresh and dried grapes have separate codes. The citrus fruit HS code range is heading 0805.
Frozen goods go in 0811. They may be raw, or cooked in steam or boiling water, and they may have sugar added. Goods that are only provisionally preserved, and not fit to eat in that state, go in 0812.
Dried fruit that is not in headings 0801 to 0806 goes in 0813, along with mixes of nuts or dried fruit. Peel of citrus fruit or melons has its own heading, 0814.
Shelled or in shell: nuts in headings 0801 and 0802
Coconuts, Brazil nuts and cashews sit in heading 0801. Almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, chestnuts, pistachios, macadamias and pine nuts sit in the nuts HS code 0802 group.
For most nuts, the shell decides the last digits. A nut in its shell gets one code, and the same nut without it gets the next one.
Some nuts are not named in either heading. They go to a catch-all code at the end of 0802. Check the named codes first, and use the catch-all only when nothing else fits. If you are unsure, try the HS code classifier.
