HS Code 0807Melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); fresh
3 six-digit codes · Heading 7 of 14 in Chapter 08 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
This page explains what each subheading covers, how to pick the right one and what belongs somewhere else.
“Melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); fresh” divides three ways under heading 0807 — 080711, 080719 and 080720. Each carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 7 of 14 in Chapter 08, Fruit and nuts, edible; peel of citrus fruit or melons, which runs to 70 six-digit codes in all.
What HS code 0807 covers
The Harmonized System is a global naming list for traded goods. The World Customs Organization (WCO) maintains it, and customs offices use it for classification. Heading 0807 is the part of that list for fresh melons, watermelons and papaws (papayas). In India the same heading is often called HSN code 0807.
The word fresh matters. Heading 0807 is only for fruit that has not been dried, frozen or preserved. It sits in Chapter 08, which groups edible fruit and nuts. Those goods are traded in large volumes, so a correct code helps keep customs paperwork and trade records clean.
HS 0807 sub-classifications: 080711, 080719 and 080720
Heading 0807 splits into three six-digit subheadings. Each one names a different kind of fruit. Here is what each one means in plain words.
- 080711 is for fresh watermelons. This is the code to use when the goods are watermelons.
- 080719 is for fresh melons other than watermelons.
- 080720 is for fresh papaws, which most people call papayas.
How to choose the right code for melons and papayas
Start with the fruit itself and follow three steps. First, check that the goods are fresh. Second, ask whether the fruit is a papaya. If yes, use 080720. Third, if it is a melon, ask whether it is a watermelon. A watermelon goes under 080711.
That also answers the common question about the difference between 080711 and 080719. Code 080711 holds watermelons only. Code 080719 holds every other fresh melon. If a melon is not a watermelon, it is a 080719 melon.
