What HS Code 09 covers
Think of this chapter as the kitchen shelf of the tariff. It holds the drinks you brew and the spices you cook with. Customs offices use these codes to name a product on every import and export form. This is what customs tariff classification means in daily trade.
The drinks come first: coffee sits in 0901, tea in 0902 and mate in 0903. Everything after that is a spice. If your product is a fruit or a nut, look in Chapter 08. If it is an oil seed or a medicinal plant, look in Chapter 12.
How to choose the right Chapter 09 code
Each heading splits into six-digit subheadings. A few simple questions will usually point you to the right one.
- Coffee: first ask if the beans are roasted. Then ask if the caffeine has been removed.
- Tea: green tea is not fermented, while black tea is fermented or partly fermented. Then check the pack size, because packs up to 3kg and packs over 3kg have different codes.
- Spices: ask if the spice is whole or crushed or ground. Most spice headings keep a separate line for each.
- Blends and leftovers: a mixture of products from different headings has its own line, and so does a spice that fits no named line. Both sit at the end of heading 0910.

Coffee HS codes (0901): roasted, green and decaffeinated
People often search for the coffee HS code in chapter 9. All of it sits in heading 0901. Two questions decide the line: is the coffee roasted, and has the caffeine been removed?
Heading 0901 also takes coffee husks and skins, plus coffee substitutes that contain coffee. These have their own line apart from the beans. Green beans are the unroasted kind, so they fall on the not roasted lines.
Spice HS codes: pepper, cardamom, cumin, ginger and turmeric
Pepper is in 0904, together with dried chilli-type fruits of the genus capsicum or pimenta. Vanilla is in 0905, cinnamon in 0906 and cloves in 0907.
Seeds such as cumin and coriander are found in 0909, next to anise, fennel and caraway. Ginger, saffron and turmeric belong to 0910.

Roasted coffee that still has its caffeine is 090121. Roasted coffee that is decaffeinated is 090122.

Coffee that is not roasted or decaffeinated is 090111. If the caffeine has been removed but the beans are not roasted, use 090112.
How do green tea and black tea HS codes differ?
Green tea in packs up to 3kg is 090210, and black tea in packs up to 3kg is 090230. Packs over 3kg have their own separate codes for each type.
