Chapter 84 Machinery and mechanical appliances, boilers, nuclear reactors; parts thereof
86 headings · 538 six-digit codes · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 84 is the Harmonized System chapter for machinery and mechanical appliances, from boilers and engines to pumps, machine-tools and computers. Use this page to see what the chapter covers, pick the right heading and find shipment records.
Chapter 84 is one of the more finely subdivided chapters: 86 headings carry 538 six-digit codes between them, an average of 6.3 per heading. The deepest is 8462 (Machine-tools (including presses) for working metal by forging, hammering or die forging…) with 20. The chapter sits in Section XVI, Machinery, Electrical Equipment and Parts, alongside 1 other chapter.

Scope and exclusions of Chapter 84
Chapter 84 groups machines by what they do. Think of the headings as product families. Each family sits in a block of neighbouring heading numbers, so you can scan the list quickly.
Some heading texts also say what they leave out. Heading 8403 covers central heating boilers but excludes the boilers of 8402. Heading 8468 covers soldering and welding machinery, other than the goods of 8515. Read the exclusion wording before you settle on a heading.
- 8401 to 8406: nuclear reactors, boilers and steam turbines
- 8407 to 8412: internal combustion engines, hydraulic turbines, gas turbines and other motors
- 8413 and 8414: pumps, compressors and fans
- 8415 to 8419: air conditioning, furnaces, refrigerators and heating equipment
- 8456 to 8466: machine-tools and their parts
- 8470 to 8473: calculators, automatic data processing machines and office machines
- 8481 to 8484: taps, cocks and valves, ball or roller bearings, transmission parts and gaskets
How to classify machinery parts under Chapter 84
Start with the machine, then decide if you have the whole machine or a part. The chapter has several parts headings, and each one is tied to a block of machines.
Engine parts go to 8409, which covers parts used solely or mainly with the engines of 8407 or 8408. Spark-ignition engines sit in 8407 and diesel or semi-diesel engines sit in 8408, so the way the fuel ignites decides the heading.
Parts for lifting and earth-moving machinery go to 8431, which serves headings 8425 to 8430. Parts for machine-tools go to 8466, which serves headings 8456 to 8465. Parts for calculating and office machines go to 8473.
Heading 8487 is the catch-all for machinery parts that have no electrical features and are not named elsewhere in the chapter. Heading 8479 does the same job for whole machines with individual functions that no other heading names. Use these last, only after the specific headings fail. If you are unsure, try the HS code classifier.
What is the difference between Chapter 84 and Chapter 85?
Chapter 85 is titled electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof, including sound recorders and reproducers and television image and sound recorders and reproducers.
The line is not always sharp. Heading 8487 says its parts contain no electrical connectors, insulators, coils, contacts or other electrical features. Computers still sit in Chapter 84, under heading 8471. So do machines that make semiconductors and flat panel displays, under heading 8486. Check the heading text, not just the word electric.
Most searched Chapter 84 product groups
These headings are common starting points for buyers and sellers of machinery. Each one has its own page with the six-digit codes under it.
Compressors are a good example of how the six-digit level works. Within 8414, code 841430 is for compressors used in refrigerating equipment, 841440 is for air compressors on a wheeled chassis for towing, and 841480 is for other air, vacuum or gas pumps and compressors. For computers, code 847130 covers portable machines with at least a CPU, a keyboard and a display.
- 8414: air or vacuum pumps, compressors and fans
- 8415: air conditioning machines
- 8418: refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps
- 8421: centrifuges and filtering machinery
- 8429: bulldozers, graders and excavators
- 8438: machinery for making food and drink
- 8443: printing machinery, printers and copiers
- 8448: auxiliary machinery for textile machines, such as dobbies and jacquards
- 8471: automatic data processing machines
- 8481: taps, cocks and valves
- 8482: ball or roller bearings
- 8485: machines for additive manufacturing

HS Chapter 84: common questions
What is HS code 84?
It is the first of the two chapters in its section, and chapter 85 is the other.
What products are classified in Chapter 84?
The chapter covers boilers, turbines, engines, pumps, compressors, air conditioners, refrigerators, machine-tools, computers, valves and bearings. Many other industrial machines are also listed, such as cranes, textile machines and food processing machines.
What is the difference between Chapter 84 and Chapter 85?
Chapter 84 is for mechanical machinery. Chapter 85 is for electrical machinery and equipment, including sound and television recorders. Heading 8487 covers parts that have no electrical features.
Which HS code is used for computers and laptops?
Computers fall under heading 8471, automatic data processing machines. A portable machine with a CPU, a keyboard and a display is listed at 847130.
How are machinery parts classified in Chapter 84?
Parts usually go to the heading of the machine they serve. For example, 8409 covers engine parts, 8431 covers parts for lifting and earth-moving machines, and 8466 covers parts for machine-tools. Heading 8487 takes non-electrical parts that no other heading names.
What is the HS code for air compressors?
Air compressors sit in heading 8414. Code 841440 is for air compressors mounted on a wheeled chassis for towing, and 841430 is for compressors used in refrigerating equipment.
How can I find importers and exporters of HS code 84 products?
Pick your heading on this page, then use the import data and export data pages on EximDataX to look up records for that code. The buyer data and supplier data pages show the company side.
