HS Code 8468Machinery and apparatus for soldering, brazing, welding, whether or not capable of cutting, other than those of heading no. 8515; gas-operated surface tempering machines and appliances

4 six-digit codes · Heading 68 of 86 in Chapter 84 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 8468, also written as HSN code 8468, is the heading for machines that join metal parts with heat or flame. This page explains what it includes, what it leaves out and how to pick the right code.

Goods answering to “Machinery and apparatus for soldering, brazing, welding, whether or not capable of cutting, other than those of heading no. 8515; gas-operated surface tempering machines and appliances” split into 4 six-digit codes, 846810 through 846890. Each one carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 68 of 86 in Chapter 84, Machinery and mechanical appliances, boilers, nuclear reactors; parts thereof, which runs to 538 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 8468 covers

Heading 8468 is about equipment that joins or repairs metal parts with heat. Soldering and brazing join parts with a melted filler metal. Welding joins parts by melting their edges together.

The wording says the machine may or may not be capable of cutting. So a torch or machine that can also cut still belongs here when its main job is soldering, brazing or welding.

The heading also takes in gas-operated surface tempering machines. Tempering is a heat treatment, and these machines apply it to the surface of a metal part.

One exclusion matters. Machines that fall under heading 8515 are not classed in 8468. The wording of heading 8515 decides those cases. If your machine could fit both, test it in the HS code classifier before you file.

How to choose the right 8468 code

The four codes work like a short checklist. Start at the top and stop at the first line that fits your goods. The letters n.e.c. mean not elsewhere classified. A code marked this way is a catch-all, so use it only after the named codes fail.

A common mistake is to put a complete machine under the parts code. Use 846890 only for parts of these machines, such as the code for welding machine parts. A finished unit goes in one of the other three.

  • Use 846890.
  • Use 846810.
  • Does it run on gas and is it not a hand-held blow pipe? Use 846820.
  • Is it any other soldering, brazing or welding apparatus? Use 846880. This is the bucket for other welding apparatus.

Some goods look close to 8468 but sit in a neighbouring heading. Hand tools with their own motor belong with HS 8467 hand tools. Machines that work material with a laser or plasma arc are grouped under HS 8456 laser and plasma machine-tools. Parts and attachments for metal-working machine-tools are in HS 8466 machine-tool parts.

If a machine has its own job and no heading names it, look at HS 8479 machinery n.e.c. Plain machinery parts with no electrical features go to HS 8487 machinery parts. To browse the whole machinery family, go back to the Chapter 84 machinery HS codes page.
