HS Code 8482Ball or roller bearings

8 six-digit codes · Heading 81 of 86 in Chapter 84 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 8482 is the customs heading for bearings built with balls or rollers. Read on to see what each code means, how to choose one, and where to find trade records.

Heading 8482 is finely cut: 8 six-digit codes, 848210 to 848299, all of them under “Ball or roller bearings”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 81 of 86 in Chapter 84, Machinery and mechanical appliances, boilers, nuclear reactors; parts thereof, which runs to 538 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 8482 covers

A bearing sits between two parts and lets one turn with little friction. This heading holds finished bearings and the small pieces made for them.

People who search for a bearing HSN code are looking for these same codes, so the guide below applies to them too.

Six-digit codes under 8482 by bearing type

The table above gives the official wording. Here is the same list in plain words, grouped by how the bearing is built.

  • 848210: ball bearings. Round balls run between an inner ring and an outer ring.
  • 848220: tapered types, with cone-shaped rolling parts. Cone assemblies go here too.
  • 848230: spherical types, with curved, barrel-like rolling parts.
  • 848240: needle types, with long, thin rolling parts. Caged sets are included.
  • 848250: cylindrical types, with straight rolling parts. Caged sets count here when no other code names them.
  • 848280: anything else in this heading, including bearings that mix balls and rollers.
  • 848291: loose rolling pieces sold as parts: balls, needles and rollers.
  • 848299: every other bearing part, such as rings.

How to pick the right 8482 code

Start with the shape of the rolling part. A ball points to 848210. A roller needs one more question: is it tapered, spherical, needle or cylindrical? Each shape has its own code.

Use 848280 only when the item fits none of those shapes.

Then ask if you ship a whole bearing or a piece of one. Pieces split in two. Rolling pieces go to 848291, and other pieces go to 848299. So a complete tapered bearing is 848220, but the rollers taken out of it are 848291.

If you are unsure, try the HS code classifier before you file.

8482 vs 8483: bearings vs bearing housings

This is a common mix-up. Heading 8482 is for the bearing itself. Heading 8483 is for the parts around it: bearing housings, plain shaft bearings, transmission shafts, gears, gear boxes, pulleys and clutches.

So a housing goes to 8483, and the bearing inside it goes to 8482. A plain shaft bearing has no balls or rollers, so it goes to 8483 as well.

Heading 8487 is a catch-all for machinery parts that no other heading in the chapter names. Check it last, only when 8482 and 8483 do not fit.

Ball and roller bearings import and export data

Trade records show who moves bearings, in what form and between which markets. You can follow one bearing type through its code, or the whole heading at once.

EximDataX shows shipment-level import and export records from official customs sources. Coverage: 43 direct customs feeds plus 184 mirror-derived countries. Named buyers and named suppliers are available in 38 of the 43 direct markets. Most markets refresh weekly and some refresh daily.
