HS Code 8431Machinery parts; used solely or principally with the machinery of heading no. 8425 to 8430

8 six-digit codes · Heading 31 of 86 in Chapter 84 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 8431 covers parts made for cranes, hoists, forklifts, lifts and earth-moving machines. The machine a part serves decides which code it gets.

Heading 8431 is finely cut: 8 six-digit codes, 843110 to 843149, all of them under “Machinery parts; used solely or principally with the machinery of heading no. 8425 to 8430”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 31 of 86 in Chapter 84, Machinery and mechanical appliances, boilers, nuclear reactors; parts thereof, which runs to 538 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 8431 covers

The official wording is long, but the idea is simple. This is a parts heading. Those machines lift, carry, dig, push and bore.

Think of hoists, jacks, cranes, fork-lift trucks, lifts, escalators, bulldozers and excavators. In India the same number is called HSN code 8431. It is the same code under a different name.

A part that fits only one of these machine families is a good match. A part that fits many kinds of machines may belong in a different parts heading of Chapter 84, covered below.

What products are classified under HSN 8431?

Each six-digit code is tied to a machine heading or to a type of part. Here is a quick map from part to code, with example machines.

Read the list from the machine first, then the part.

  • 843110: hoist, winch and jack parts, from heading 8425
  • 843120: fork-lift and works truck parts, from heading 8427
  • 843131: lift, skip hoist and escalator parts
  • 843139: parts for other handling machines of heading 8428, such as conveyors
  • 843141: buckets, shovels, grabs and grips for cranes and digging machines of headings 8426 and 8430
  • 843142: bulldozer and angledozer blades
  • 843143: parts for boring and sinking rigs under heading 8430
  • 843149: other parts for machines that move earth, minerals or ores

How to choose the right subheading

Step 1: name the machine. Or is it a bulldozer or excavator (8429), or a digging and boring machine (8430)?

Step 2: look at the part. A bucket, shovel, grab or grip has its own line. So does a dozer blade. Lift and escalator parts also have their own line.

Step 3: if the part has no special line, follow the machine. A part for a hoist goes to 843110. A part for a fork-lift truck goes to 843120. A part for a conveyor goes to 843139. Earth, mineral and ore machine parts that fit nowhere else go to 843149.

If you are still unsure, run the item through the HS code classifier and compare the result with the wording of each code.

8431 vs 8487, 8409, 8466 and 8473

Chapter 84 has several parts headings. Each serves a different group of machines, which is why the machine matters so much.

Heading 8487 is the catch-all. It takes non-electrical machinery parts that have no home elsewhere in the chapter. If a part fits 8431, it does not go to 8487.

Other parts headings follow the same logic. Heading 8409 is for engine parts, 8466 for machine-tool parts and 8473 for office machine parts. A crane part belongs to none of these, because a crane is not an engine, a machine-tool or an office machine.
