What HS code 73 articles of iron or steel include
This chapter sits in Section XV, base metals, which runs across chapters 72 to 83. It is about things that have already been shaped into a product. Think of a pipe, a screw, a chain or a cooking stove.
In India the same chapter is searched as HSN code 73. The number is the same. Both follow the Harmonized System, the shared customs tariff classification used by most countries. The first six digits match worldwide. Each country then adds its own extra digits.
Oil and gas pipe, fasteners, wire rope and kitchen goods all sit here. Stainless steel articles are included, and many headings split them from other steel.
Chapter 73 heading groups at a glance
The headings follow a loose order. They start with building and rail goods, move to tubes and tanks, then to wire and small parts. They end with household goods and a catch-all. Open a heading page to see its full list of codes.
- 7301 and 7302: sheet piling, welded sections and railway track parts
- 7303 to 7306: tubes, pipes and hollow profiles, cast, seamless or welded
- 7307: pipe fittings such as couplings, elbows, sleeves and flanges
- 7308: structures such as bridge sections, towers and lattice masts
- 7309 to 7311: large tanks, smaller drums and cans, and gas cylinders
- 7312 to 7316: wire rope, cable, barbed wire, mesh, chain and anchors

How do I find the correct HS code under Chapter 73?
Start with what the item is. Then check its shape, how it was made and what it is used for. A few simple tests settle most cases.
For pipes, ask one question first: does it have a seam? A pipe with no seam belongs in 7304. A pipe that is welded, riveted or closed in a similar way is not seamless. If it is round and wide, the heading text for 7305 sets the diameter cut-off. Other welded pipes go to 7306. Line pipe for oil or gas and drilling casing have their own subheadings inside these headings, such as 730411 and 730520.
For tanks and drums, check the size and what goes inside. Anything over 300l goes to 7309. Anything up to 300l goes to 7310. Vessels built to hold compressed or liquefied gas are in 7311, whatever their size.
For fasteners, go to 7318. Threaded items such as screws and nuts run from 731811 to 731816. Washers and rivets run from 731821 to 731829.
Use 7326 last. It is a residual heading for articles that are not named anywhere else in the chapter. If a more specific heading fits, choose that one. The HS code classifier can help you narrow down a product.
Difference between Chapter 72 and Chapter 73
Chapter 72 is the raw metal: ingots, bars, sheets and coils. Chapter 73 starts where the metal has been turned into a finished or semi-finished item. A bolt, a pipe or a chain is a Chapter 73 good.
Other metals have their own chapters. For aluminium goods, look at Chapter 76. Hand tools and cutlery are in Chapter 82. Locks, fittings and other mixed base metal goods are in Chapter 83. A product can look like a steel article and still sit in one of these chapters, so read the heading text before you choose.
