What is HS code 7310?
They can hold any material: liquids, powders or solids. The one limit is size. The capacity must not be more than 300 litres.
The group names tanks, casks, drums, cans and boxes. In plain words, think of steel drums and steel cans. The container may be lined on the inside. It may also be made to keep heat in or out. Both kinds still belong here.
One group of goods is left out. Containers for compressed or liquefied gas do not go in 7310. They have their own heading, covered below.
Heading 7310 is part of Chapter 73, which is about iron or steel articles. The Harmonized System sets the first six digits, and they are the same in every country that uses it. Each country then adds its own extra digits for its tariff. So the six-digit code is the shared base. Your local duty depends on the national code built on top of it.
Six-digit codes under 7310 by capacity
Size comes first. For small containers, the way the lid is closed matters next. Use the list below to find your band, then check the exact customs wording in the table above.
- Use it when the capacity is 50 litres or more.
- Use it when the can is sealed in one of those two ways.
- Use it for small containers that are not cans closed by soldering or crimping.
How to choose: 7309 vs 7310 vs 7311
Many buyers ask about the difference between HS 7309 and 7310. The answer is capacity. Heading 7309 covers reservoirs, tanks, vats and similar containers over 300 litres. Heading 7310 covers the same kind of container at 300 litres or less.
Gas is the other test. Heading 7311 covers iron or steel containers for compressed or liquefied gas. A steel gas cylinder goes there, not in 7310. This holds whatever the size of the cylinder.
Ask two questions in this order. What does it hold? How big is it?
- Table or kitchen articles for the home: look at heading 7323.
- Steel articles that fit no other heading in the chapter: heading 7326.
- Still unsure? Run your product through the HS code classifier.
