10 six-digit codes · Heading 6 of 26 in Chapter 73 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 7306 is where welded steel pipes and other non-seamless tubes are classed. Use this page to choose the right six-digit code, then look up the trade records.

The WCO writes heading 7306 as a residual bucket: goods of Chapter 73that answer to “Iron or steel (excluding cast iron); tubes, pipes and hollow profiles (not seamless), n.e.c. in chapter 73” and that no more specific heading in the chapter already claims. It still carries 10 six-digit codes, 730611 through 730690, so “other” is not the end of the classification here. The heading is number 6 of 26 in Chapter 73, Iron or steel articles, which runs to 124 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 7306 covers

Heading 7306 holds welded steel pipes and other non-seamless tubes. It also takes hollow profiles, which are long hollow shapes such as square or rectangular sections. Cast iron is not part of it. The goods belong to Chapter 73, the chapter for iron or steel articles. Some buyers search for it as HSN code 7306.

The words "not seamless" are the key idea. A welded pipe is made by joining the edges of a strip or plate, and it belongs here. A seamless pipe is made as one piece with no joint, so it goes elsewhere.

Inside the heading, the codes split by use (oil and gas or general), by shape (circular or not) and by material (stainless, alloy or plain steel). The next sections walk through each split.

Line pipe and casing and tubing for oil and gas

Four codes are made for the oil and gas industry. They come in pairs, one for stainless steel and one for the rest. All of them are welded.

Line pipe carries oil or gas over long distances in a pipeline. Welded stainless line pipe goes under 730611.

Casing and tubing line a well and carry fluids during drilling. The stainless version is 730621. The version that is not stainless is 730629.

The test is the use of the pipe. If it is made for pipelines or for drilling, check these codes first. Only then look at the general codes for round or square pipe.

Circular vs square and rectangular hollow sections

Pipes that are not made for oil or gas are sorted by shape first, then by material.

Circular cross-section tubes have three welded codes. Stainless steel takes 730640. So 730640 is the usual answer for a round welded stainless steel tube.

This is the code people need for square steel tube or box section.

A shape that is neither round, square nor rectangular, such as an oval tube, goes under 730669. Anything not seamless that fits none of the codes above falls under 730690.

HS 7306 vs 7303, 7304, 7305 and 7307

Several nearby headings look alike. Check these before you settle on 7306.

Is the pipe made of cast iron? Then it goes to 7303. Is it seamless? Then it goes to 7304, even if it is made for oil and gas.

Then it goes to 7305. The exact diameter limit is written in the text of that heading.

Is the item a coupling, elbow or sleeve that joins pipes? That is a fitting, and it goes to 7307. Pieces cut and prepared for use in a building frame may fit 7308 instead.

If you are still unsure, the HS code classifier can help you narrow it down.

Heading 7305 covers round pipe that is not seamless and has a very wide outside diameter. Narrower round pipe stays in 7306.

What is the HS code for square or rectangular steel hollow sections?

Use 730661 for welded square or rectangular hollow sections. Other non-round shapes go to 730669.
