Chapter 61 HS codes describe finished clothing made by knitting or crocheting. The maker loops yarn into shape instead of cutting woven cloth. You may also see this chapter called HSN code 61.

The chapter includes knitted apparel for adults, children and babies. It also covers articles of apparel and clothing accessories such as hosiery, gloves, scarves and shawls. Each type of garment has its own heading, and each heading splits into 6-digit HS codes by fibre or by wearer.

How to find the correct HS code for my product under chapter 61

Work through these questions in order. First, who wears it? Headings 6103 and 6104 split suits, jackets and trousers by the wearer's gender and age.

Next, what is the garment? A T-shirt goes to 6109. A pullover or cardigan goes to 6110. Socks and tights go to 6115.

Last, what is it made of? Many headings split by fibre. For example, 610910 is for cotton T-shirts and 610990 is for T-shirts of other textile materials. Cashmere pullovers have their own code, 611012. Graduated compression hosiery is 611510.

Difference between HS chapter 61 and chapter 62

The dividing line is how the garment was made. Looped yarn belongs here. Chapter 62 holds garments cut from woven cloth.

Chapter 60 is a different case. It covers knitted or crocheted fabrics, which are cloth sold by length and not yet made into clothes. Once the fabric becomes a garment, it moves to Chapter 61. Code 611300 is a special case for garments made from certain coated or laminated knitted fabrics.
