What HS code 6101 covers
Heading 6101 is for outer coats made for men or boys. The fabric must be knitted or crocheted. Knitted fabric is made from looped yarn. It is not woven on a loom.
You may also see this written as HSN code 6101 or HTS code 6101. These are the same heading in different tariff systems. Countries share the first digits of the code, and a national tariff can add more digits after them.
The official text names a list of garments. In plain words, the heading covers:
- Overcoats: long, warm coats worn over other clothes
- Car-coats: shorter coats, cut to be worn while driving or sitting
- Capes and cloaks: loose coats with no sleeves or with wide openings for the arms
- Anoraks: hooded jackets that guard against wind and rain
- Ski-jackets: jackets made for snow and cold
- Wind-cheaters and wind-jackets: light jackets that block the wind
Cotton, man-made fibre and other coats: the split by fibre
Heading 6101 is divided by the fibre the coat is made of. The garment type stays the same. Only the material changes the code.
Code 610130 is for man-made fibre coats, such as polyester or nylon. Code 610190 is the catch-all for any other textile material, such as wool.
Blended fabrics can be tricky. Customs rules decide which fibre counts for a blend, so read the notes in your national tariff before you fill in a form.
Difference between HS 6101 and 6102, 6103 and other headings
The wearer matters. A knitted coat cut for a woman goes there, not here.
The garment type matters too. The 6101 text says it excludes anything that belongs in 6103. So a knitted blazer is a 6103 item, while an overcoat or anorak stays in 6101.
Other nearby headings take different garments. Heading 6112 holds track suits and ski suits, which are not the same as a ski-jacket on its own.
The fabric matters as well. A coat that is woven, not knitted or crocheted, does not belong in this chapter. It sits in the chapter for woven apparel.
How to confirm the correct HS code for knitted men's coats
Work through these questions in order. Each answer narrows the code.

- Is it a coat or a suit jacket? Overcoats and anoraks fit 6101. Blazers and suit jackets fit 6103.
- What is the main fibre? Cotton gives 610120. Man-made fibre gives 610130. Anything else gives 610190.
