What HS code 6104 covers

Knitted cloth is made from loops of yarn. Woven cloth is not knitted, so it does not belong here. Swimwear is left out.

Countries label their tariff lists in different ways, so you may also see hsn code 6104 or hts code 6104. They point to the same heading in the global system. The heading is part of the wider group of Chapter 61 apparel, which holds knitted clothing for every age and sex.

In plain words, think of it as a heading for women's knitted outfits and the pieces that go with them. Each six-digit subheading then narrows the choice by garment and by fibre.

6104 codes by garment type

The six-digit subheadings are easier to read when you group them by garment. Here is each group with its fibre splits.

How to choose the right 6104 code

Pick the garment first. Ask what the item is: a suit, an ensemble, a jacket, a dress, a skirt, or trousers and shorts. This gives you the group of codes to look at.

Then check the fibre. Look at the label to see what the fabric is made of. The main choices are wool or fine animal hair, cotton and synthetic fibres. Dresses also have a code for artificial fibres. Anything else falls into the last code of the group, which is for other textile materials.

Suits are the simple case. They have just two codes, 610413 and 610419. A cotton suit has no code of its own, so it goes to 610419. A knitted cotton dress for a woman goes to 610442. A women's wool jacket goes to 610431.

If you are still unsure, try the HS code classifier. It helps you narrow down a product before you file or search.

What 6104 does not include

Several nearby headings look alike, so it helps to know where the lines fall. Blouses and shirt-blouses are in 6106.

Swimwear is excluded from 6104. Heading 6112 is where track suits, ski suits and swimwear sit. If your product is a knitted sweater or a T-shirt, look at the other headings in the chapter rather than 6104.

The sort by sex matters. The same garment can fall under 6103 or 6104 depending on whether it is made for men and boys or for women and girls.
