8 headings · 72 six-digit codes · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 54 man-made filaments covers thread, yarn, monofilament and woven fabric made from long, unbroken strands. Use this page to see what each part holds and how to pick the right code.

Chapter 54 is one of the more finely subdivided chapters: 8 headings carry 72 six-digit codes between them, an average of 9.0 per heading. The deepest is 5407 (Woven fabrics of synthetic filament yarn, including woven fabrics obtained from materials…) with 25. The chapter sits in Section XI, Textiles and Textile Articles, alongside 13 other chapters.

What HS Code 54 Man-made Filaments Cover

A filament is a very long strand with no breaks. Man-made means people produce it in a factory. Some filaments are synthetic, such as polyester and nylon.

The goods fall into groups. One group is thread and yarn. Another is thick single strands and thin strips. The last is woven cloth made from the yarn. Traders also search for this chapter as chapter 54 HS code or HSN code 54. The goods are the same.

Each heading has its own page. Follow the links in the sections below to open them.

HS Code 54 Sewing Thread and Synthetic Filament Yarn

Heading 5401 is sewing thread. Synthetic thread is 540110 and artificial thread is 540120. It does not matter whether the thread is sold in small packs.

It is the busiest yarn heading, with many splits. The splits depend on the material, such as nylon, polyester or polypropylene. They also depend on whether the yarn is textured, high tenacity or twisted. Single polyester yarn that is partially oriented and not textured sits at 540246.

Heading 5403 is the artificial twin. It covers viscose rayon filament yarn, for example high tenacity yarn at 540310, and cellulose acetate yarn at 540333.

Heading 5406 is the odd one out. It holds yarn sold in retail packs, and has a single code, 540600.

  • 5401: sewing thread of man-made filaments
  • 5402: synthetic filament yarn
  • 5403: artificial filament yarn
  • 5406: filament yarn sold in retail packs

Monofilament, Strip and Woven Fabrics Under Chapter 54

A monofilament is one thick strand. Headings 5404 and 5405 cover strands of 67 decitex or more with no cross-section wider than 1mm. They also cover strip, such as artificial straw, up to 5mm wide. Heading 5404 is the synthetic side. Examples are elastomeric monofilament at 540411, polypropylene monofilament at 540412 and strip at 540490. Heading 5405 is the artificial side, listed at 540500.

Headings 5407 and 5408 are woven fabrics. Heading 5408 uses artificial filament yarn, such as viscose rayon.

Inside 5407, codes split by fibre type and by the share of that fibre by weight. They split again by finish: bleached or unbleached, dyed, woven from yarns of different colours, or printed. Look here for polyester filament woven fabric.

How to Choose the Right Chapter 54 Code

Ask a few questions in order. Each answer narrows the choice.

First, what is the form? Thread goes to 5401. Thick strands and strip go to 5404 or 5405. Cloth goes to 5407 or 5408.

Second, what is the material? Yarn follows 5402 or 5403. Cloth follows 5407 or 5408.

Third, how thick is the strand? Fine strands under 67 decitex are yarn. Thicker ones with a cross-section up to 1mm move to 5404 or 5405.

Fourth, how is it sold? Other yarn stays in 5402 or 5403.

Last, check the fibre length. This chapter is for continuous filaments. Short cut fibres are staple fibres, and they sit in Chapter 55 man-made staple fibres. Cotton is a different material again and sits in Chapter 52 cotton. If you are still unsure, try the HS code classifier.

HS Chapter 54: common questions

What products are classified under HS code 54?

Sewing thread, synthetic and artificial filament yarn, monofilament, strip and woven fabrics made from man-made filaments. Headings 5401 to 5408 sort them by form and material.

What is the difference between HS 5402 and 5403?

Heading 5402 is for synthetic yarn, such as nylon or polyester. Heading 5403 is for artificial yarn, such as viscose rayon or cellulose acetate.

What is the HS code for polyester sewing thread?

Polyester is a synthetic filament, so its sewing thread goes to 540110. Thread made of artificial filaments goes to 540120.

Which HS code covers textured polyester yarn?

Textured polyester filament yarn is 540233. Woven fabric made from it moves to heading 5407.

Is staple fibre yarn classified in chapter 54?

No. Staple fibres are short cut lengths, and they have their own chapter, Chapter 55. Chapter 54 is for continuous filaments.

How can I find importers and exporters of chapter 54 products?

Find your code first, then search it on the import data, export data, buyer data and supplier data pages. A free demo shows how the records look.
