HS Code 5403Artificial filament yarn (other than sewing thread), not put up for retail sale, including artificial monofilament of less than 67 decitex

8 six-digit codes · Heading 3 of 8 in Chapter 54 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

Use this page to find the subheading that fits your yarn.

Heading 5403 is finely cut: 8 six-digit codes, 540310 to 540349, all of them under “Artificial filament yarn (other than sewing thread), not put up for retail sale, including artificial monofilament of less than 67 decitex”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 3 of 8 in Chapter 54, Man-made filaments; strip and the like of man-made textile materials, which runs to 72 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 5403 covers

Artificial yarn is made from natural cellulose that has been treated into a filament. Viscose rayon and cellulose acetate are the two main kinds named in this heading. Fine monofilament of less than 67 decitex is also included. Decitex is a unit that tells you how thick a yarn is.

Two tests come first. The yarn must not be sewing thread, and it must not be packed for retail sale. If it passes both, choose the six-digit code by material, build and twist.

HS 5403 subheadings: viscose rayon, acetate and other yarn

All eight codes share the same limits on thickness and sale type. These short labels show what sets them apart.

  • 540310: high tenacity viscose rayon
  • 540331: viscose rayon, single, low twist
  • 540332: viscose rayon, single, high twist
  • 540333: cellulose acetate, single
  • 540339: other single yarn
  • 540341: viscose rayon, folded or cabled
  • 540342: cellulose acetate, folded or cabled
  • 540349: other folded or cabled yarn

How to pick the right 5403 code

Answer four questions in order. Each answer rules out some codes.

Step 1, material. Any other artificial material leads to 540339 or 540349.

Step 2, strength. The other viscose codes take ordinary yarn.

Step 3, build. Single yarn is one strand. Folded or cabled yarn is made by joining several strands. Single codes end in 1, 2, 3 or 9 after the 5403 prefix, as listed above.

Step 4, twist. This applies to single viscose yarn. Twist means turns along one metre. The cut-off is 120 turns per metre. At or below it, use 540331. Above it, use 540332.

The codes ending in 9 are catch-all codes. Use them only when no named code fits. Still unsure? Try the HS code classifier.

5403 vs 5402, 5405 and 5406

Nearby headings look alike, and small details decide the code.

Heading 5402 is the synthetic twin of 5403. Both cover bulk filament yarn, so the fibre decides. Heading 5405 takes artificial monofilament once it reaches 67 decitex, as long as no cross-section is over 1mm. Heading 5406 takes man-made filament yarn that is packed for retail sale.

Man-made sewing thread has its own home in heading 5401. Woven cloth made from artificial filament yarn is in heading 5408.
