What HS code 4114 covers

Heading 4114 is a small group of finished leathers with special surfaces.

Traders in India often search for the same heading as HSN code 4114. The number is identical. Only the label changes. The goods sit in the leather chapter, after the general headings for tanned and finished leather.

The wording is very specific. Because of that, a shipment of these goods has one place in the tariff. Once you know the finish of your leather, the right code is easy to find.

Subheadings under HS heading 4114: 411410 and 411420

The split between the two codes depends on the finish of the leather. Look at what the leather is. Then pick the code that names it.

Code 411410 is the chamois code. Choose it when your goods are chamois or combination chamois. Nothing else is listed there.

Code 411420 is for coated and metallic finishes. It names patent leather, laminated patent leather and metallised leather, also spelled metallized leather. Choose it when the leather has a patent coat, a patent laminate or a metal finish.

So chamois should not be filed at 411420. Patent or metallised leather should not be filed at 411410. If you are still unsure, run your product description through the classifier.

  • 411410: chamois, including combination chamois
  • 411420: patent, laminated patent and metallised leather

How 4114 differs from other finished leather headings

Headings 4107, 4112 and 4113 all cover leather that is further prepared after tanning or crusting. They are split by animal. Heading 4112 is for sheep and lambs. Heading 4113 is for other animals.

Each of these three headings carries an exclusion. The wording says the leather of heading 41.14 is left out. So a common question is whether patent leather belongs in 4107 or 4114. If the leather is patent, chamois or metallised, it goes to 4114, whatever the animal.

Heading 4115 is another case. It covers composition leather made with a basis of leather or leather fibre. It also covers leather waste, dust, powder and flour. It is not the place for the finishes named in 4114.
