HS Code 0712Vegetables, dried; whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder, but not further prepared
7 six-digit codes · Heading 12 of 14 in Chapter 07 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 0712 is where customs files dried vegetables, from dried onions to dried mushrooms and vegetable powder. This page gives each code a plain name and shows how to choose between them.
Heading 0712 is finely cut: 7 six-digit codes, 071220 to 071290, all of them under “Vegetables, dried; whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder, but not further prepared”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 12 of 14 in Chapter 07, Vegetables and certain roots and tubers; edible, which runs to 73 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 0712 covers
Dried vegetables are vegetables that have had their water removed. They can be whole, cut, sliced, broken or ground into powder, but nothing is added and nothing is cooked in.
The heading sits in Section II, Vegetable Products, inside Chapter 07. It uses the Harmonized System, the naming scheme kept by the World Customs Organization. The first six digits are meant to be the same worldwide, so a 0712 label tells a buyer in one country what a seller in another country means.
Traders also call these goods dehydrated vegetables. The key phrase is "not further prepared". Once a dried vegetable is blended into a seasoning, a soup or a ready meal, the product may belong in another chapter.
Dried onions, mushrooms and mixtures: plain names for each code
The official wording is long, and every code repeats the same ending. Here is the everyday name for each one.
- 071220: dried onions, including onion powder
- 071231: dried Agaricus mushrooms
- 071232: dried wood ears (Auricularia)
- 071233: dried jelly fungi (Tremella)
- 071234: dried shiitake mushrooms (Lentinus edodes)
- 071239: other dried mushrooms and truffles
- 071290: mixtures of dried vegetables not named elsewhere in 0712
How to choose the right 0712 code
Start with the plant. If the goods are onions, look at 071220. If they are mushrooms, find the exact kind. Agaricus, wood ears, jelly fungi and shiitake each have their own code.
Use 071239 only when the mushroom or truffle is not one of those four. The letters "n.e.c." mean "not elsewhere classified". That makes 071239 a catch-all, so check the named codes first. The code 071290 works the same way for mixtures of dried vegetables.
Powder needs a little care. Plain onion powder with nothing added fits the wording of 071220, because the code allows goods "in powder". A seasoning blend may not fit, since it has been further prepared.
Duty rates depend on the importing country, so check the rules of the country you ship to. If you are not sure which code fits, the HS code classifier can help.
What 0712 does not cover
Several nearby headings look similar but are not the same product. The state of the vegetable decides where it goes.
Fresh or chilled onions, shallots and garlic go under 0703. Vegetables that are frozen belong in 0710. Vegetables kept only for a short time, and not fit to eat in that state, belong in 0711.
Dried beans, peas and other legumes that are shelled go under 0713. Dried roots and tubers, such as manioc and sweet potatoes, are in 0714. Dried onions, mushrooms and mixed vegetables stay in 0712.
