HS Code 2909Ethers, ether-alcohols, ether-phenols, ether-alcohol-phenols, alcohol peroxides, ether peroxides, acetal and hemiacetal peroxides, ketone peroxides (chemically defined or not), and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives
10 six-digit codes · Heading 9 of 42 in Chapter 29 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 2909 is the customs heading for ethers and a few close chemical relatives. This page gives plain names for each subheading and shows how to pick the right one.
Heading 2909 is finely cut: 10 six-digit codes, 290911 to 290960, all of them under “Ethers, ether-alcohols, ether-phenols, ether-alcohol-phenols, alcohol peroxides, ether peroxides, acetal and hemiacetal peroxides, ketone peroxides (chemically defined or not), and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated derivatives”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 9 of 42 in Chapter 29, Organic chemicals, which runs to 410 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 2909 covers
An ether is a chemical with an oxygen atom sitting between two carbon groups. Heading 2909 gathers ethers and their near relatives: ether-alcohols, ether-phenols and several kinds of organic peroxides. Some price lists and tax papers call it HSN code 2909.
The heading sits in Chapter 29, the organic chemicals chapter of Section VI. Its six-digit subheadings split products by chemical structure rather than by use. Each subheading also takes in altered forms of its product, namely the halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated versions.
HS 2909 subheadings by product type
The list above gives the official wording. Here is the same set grouped by structure, in simple terms. The label n.e.c. means "not elsewhere classified". Such codes catch items that no other code in the group names.
- Open-chain (acyclic) ethers: 290911 and 290919
- Ring-shaped ethers: 290920
- Aromatic ethers, which contain a benzene-type ring: 290930
- Ether-alcohols, including the common glycol ethers: 290941, 290943, 290944 and 290949
- Ether-phenols and ether-alcohol-phenols: 290950
- Peroxides of several kinds: 290960
How to choose the right 2909 subheading
Start with what the molecule is, not with what the buyer calls it. A trade name can hide the real structure. Work through these steps in order.
- Is it a plain ether? Check its shape: open chain, ring or aromatic.
- Does the molecule also carry an alcohol group? Then it is an ether-alcohol. Look at the glycol-based codes and read each wording closely.
- Does it carry a phenol group as well? Then use the ether-phenol code.
- Is it a peroxide? Alcohol, ether, acetal, hemiacetal and ketone peroxides share one code.
- Still unsure? Compare your product with each code's wording, or try the HS code classifier.
What is not classified under 2909
Mistakes often happen between neighbouring headings. A product with an oxygen link can look like an ether but belong elsewhere.
Plain alcohols stay out. Phenols go to 2907. Heading 2909 applies only when the molecule has an ether link as well as the alcohol or phenol group.
Epoxides go to 2910. Peroxides are the twist: those made from acetals, hemiacetals and ketones are pulled into 2909 even though the parent chemicals sit in other headings.

HS Code 2909: common questions
What products are classified under HS code 2909?
Ethers, ether-alcohols, ether-phenols, ether-alcohol-phenols and several peroxides, along with their chemically altered forms. The ten six-digit codes sort them by structure.
What is the HS code for diethyl ether?
Use 290911. It is the one code that names diethyl ether directly, and other open-chain ethers fall under 290919.
What is the HS code for ethylene glycol monobutyl ether?
Look at 290943, which names monobutyl ethers of ethylene glycol or of diethylene glycol. Other monoalkyl ethers of these glycols are placed in 290944.
What is the difference between HS 2909 and HS 2910?
Heading 2910 is for epoxides, whose molecules contain a three-membered ring. Heading 2909 is for ethers without that ring, plus the related alcohol, phenol and peroxide types.
Which HS code covers ketone peroxides?
Ketone peroxides go to 290960. That code also takes alcohol, ether, acetal and hemiacetal peroxides.
