HS Code 2914Ketones and quinones; whether or not with other oxygen function, and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrostated derivatives
16 six-digit codes · Heading 14 of 42 in Chapter 29 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 2914 is the customs heading for ketones and quinones, two families of organic chemicals. Use this page to find the right six-digit code for acetone, MEK, cyclohexanone, anthraquinone and similar goods.
Heading 2914 is finely cut: 16 six-digit codes, 291411 to 291479, all of them under “Ketones and quinones; whether or not with other oxygen function, and their halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrostated derivatives”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 14 of 42 in Chapter 29, Organic chemicals, which runs to 410 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 2914 covers
A ketone is an organic compound with a carbonyl group joined to two carbon atoms. A quinone is a ring compound built around two carbonyl groups. Heading 2914 holds both, plus ketones that carry another oxygen group, plus their treated derivatives.
The heading sits in Chapter 29, organic chemicals, which belongs to Section VI. Most goods here are pure, chemically defined compounds. That makes the product name your strongest clue when you pick a code.
The codes follow a simple order. First come plain ketones, split by shape: open chain, ring and aromatic. Next come ketones with extra oxygen groups. Then come quinones. Last come the derivatives.
Ketones: acetone, MEK, MIBK, cyclohexanone and more
Plain ketones have no other oxygen function. The code depends on the shape of the molecule and, in many cases, on the named product.
Here are the codes by group.
- Open-chain ketones: 291411 acetone
- Open-chain ketones: 291412 butanone, also called methyl ethyl ketone or MEK
- Open-chain ketones: 291413 methyl isobutyl ketone, or MIBK
- Open-chain ketones: 291419 other acyclic ketones not named above
- Ring-shaped ketones: 291422 cyclohexanone and methylcyclohexanones
- Ring-shaped ketones: 291423 ionones and methylionones
- Ring-shaped ketones: 291429 all other cyclanic, cyclenic or cycloterpenic ketones
- Aromatic ketones: 291431 phenylacetone, also known as phenylpropan-2-one
- Aromatic ketones: 291439 other aromatic ketones
- Extra oxygen function: 291440 ketone-alcohols and ketone-aldehydes
- Extra oxygen function: 291450 ketone-phenols and ketones with other oxygen function
Quinones and derivatives: anthraquinone, CoQ10 and chlordecone
Quinones have three codes of their own. Anthraquinone goes to 291461. Coenzyme Q10, whose INN name is ubidecarenone, goes to 291462. Any other quinone goes to 291469.
Derivatives have a pair of codes. A ketone or quinone that is halogenated, sulphonated, nitrated or nitrosated moves out of the plain groups above. Chlordecone (ISO) has its own code, 291471. Every other derivative goes to 291479.
Check the wording of the code, not just the name on the invoice. A product with a chemical treatment on its label may belong in the derivative codes.
How to pick the right code: 2914 vs nearby headings
Several neighbouring headings look close to ketones. A few simple tests help.
If the main group is an aldehyde, look at heading 2912. If the product is a peroxide of a ketone, it is not here. Ketone peroxides are named in heading 2909, together with ethers. If the product is an acid with an extra oxygen function, check heading 2918. If the main group is a phenol, check heading 2907. Plain saturated acids belong in heading 2915.
When two headings seem to fit, read the full code wording for both. The HS code classifier can also help you narrow the choice.
