What HS code 0210 covers

This heading is the home of cured meat and smoked meat. Curing means the meat was treated so it keeps for a long time. Offal means edible parts other than muscle, such as organs.

It also takes edible flours and meals of meat or offal. These are fine powders made from the animal.

The test is simple. Is the meat preserved, rather than only kept cold? Then look here first. Meat that is only kept cold belongs in another heading of the same chapter.

HS 0210 subheadings: swine, bovine and other meat

The six-digit codes split mainly by animal. The table above has the full wording. Here is the plain version.

  • Bovine animals: 021020.
  • Primates: 021091.
  • Sea mammals such as whales, dolphins, seals and walruses: 021092.
  • Any other animal: 021099, the catch-all code.

How to choose the right HS code for cured meat

Work in order. First, name the animal. Next, if it is pork, look at the cut. Use the catch-all code only when nothing else fits.

For pork, check the bone and the cut. A belly, the cut used for streaky bacon, goes to 021012. A pork cut that is neither goes to 021019.

Beef is 021020. The wild animals and reptiles named in the table have their own codes too.

Meat from sheep, goats, poultry or any animal not named above falls to 021099. The same code takes meals made from those animals. Confirm this with the rules of the country you ship to.

A common mistake is to choose a code from the product name alone. A product called ham may be sold raw or cured. How it was preserved is what counts. If you are unsure, try the HS code classifier.

Difference between HS 0210 and 0203, and other Chapter 02 headings

Heading 0210 is about preserving. Most of its neighbours cover meat that is kept cold. Heading 0203 holds pork that is raw, chilled or frozen.

Poultry meat has its own heading, 0207. Meat of other animals kept cold is in 0208. Fat is treated apart from lean meat. Pig fat and poultry fat that are not rendered go to 0209, even when the fat is salted or smoked.

So a salted pork belly is a 0210 product, while a frozen pork belly is a 0203 product. The cut is the same, but the code changes with how the meat was kept.
