HS Code 0209Pig fat, free of lean meat, and poultry fat, not rendered or otherwise extracted, fresh, chilled, frozen, salted, in brine, dried or smoked
2 six-digit codes · Heading 9 of 10 in Chapter 02 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 0209 is the heading for raw pig fat and raw poultry fat that has not been melted down. This page shows how to tell its two codes apart and how to avoid common mix-ups.
Heading 0209 splits exactly two ways. Goods answering to “Pig fat, free of lean meat, and poultry fat, not rendered or otherwise extracted, fresh, chilled, frozen, salted, in brine, dried or smoked” classify either at 020910 or at 020990, and the wording in the table below is the whole of what separates them. The heading is number 9 of 10 in Chapter 02, Meat and edible meat offal, which runs to 66 six-digit codes in all.
Six-digit codes under heading 0209
| HS Code | Import–export description |
|---|---|
| 020910 | Fat; pig fat, free of lean meat, not rendered or otherwise extracted, fresh, chilled, frozen, salted, in brine, dried or smoked |
| 020990 | Fat; poultry fat, not rendered or otherwise extracted, fresh, chilled, frozen, salted, in brine, dried or smoked |
What HS code 0209 covers
Think of the white fat cut from a pig, or the fat taken from a chicken or another farm bird. Neither kind may be melted down or pressed out.
The fat can be fresh, chilled or frozen. It can also be salted, kept in brine, dried or smoked. All of these states stay inside the heading, as long as the fat is still raw.
Traders use other names too. Pig fat is often called pork fat, and papers may say unrendered pork fat. Some countries write the HSN code 0209 or the HTS 0209 entry. The wording changes, but the goods stay the same.
Difference between 020910 and 020990
The two codes under this heading split by animal. That is the main difference. Check the animal first, then check the lean meat point for pig fat.
- Use it for pork back fat and similar raw pig fat.
- 020990 is poultry fat. Use it for raw fat from chickens and other farm birds.
- Neither code is for cooked, melted or pressed fat.
How to classify pig and poultry fat correctly
Most mistakes come from three words in the heading: fat, lean and rendered. Ask these questions in order.
Is there lean meat in the piece? Then it is not plain fat. Pig pieces with meat on them usually belong with the meat of swine, so look at heading 0203. Poultry pieces with meat on them point to heading 0207.
Is the product cured meat, such as bacon that was salted or smoked? Check heading 0210, which is built for that. Fat on its own, treated the same way, stays in 0209.
Is the product edible offal such as liver or tongue? Offal has its own place in heading 0206. It is not fat.
Has the fat been melted, like lard or tallow? The words “not rendered or otherwise extracted” rule it out. It leaves this heading and Chapter 02, so it needs a code from another chapter. If you are unsure, run the product through the HS code classifier.
Is the HS code for pig fat the same in every country?
Mostly yes, at the six-digit level. The World Customs Organization sets the Harmonized System, and countries share the first six digits. So 020910 means pig fat and 020990 means poultry fat wherever the system is used.
Countries then add extra digits of their own. These longer national codes can split the goods further. Names such as HSN code and HTS code usually point to these national versions.
Duty rates and rules are set by each country. This page does not list them. Check the official tariff of the country you trade with before you ship.
