What HS code 9101 covers

The case is what sets it apart. It must be made of precious metal, or of base metal that is clad with precious metal.

A watch with any other kind of case does not belong here. It goes under a neighbouring heading, explained below. The brand and the price do not change the code. The case material, the type of watch and the way it is powered do.

Each six-digit code below also has a dotted form, which some tariff schedules use. Short labels are given here. The full legal text sits in the table above.

Wrist-watches are split by power and display. Pocket-watches and other watches are split by power only.

How to choose the right 9101 subheading

Work through four questions in order. They match the way the subheadings are built.

First, is it a wrist-watch? If not, it is a pocket-watch, stop-watch or another watch, and the choice is between 910191 and 910199. Second, is it electrically operated? Electric wrist-watches go to 910111 or 910119. Third, for an electric wrist-watch, check the display. Fourth, for a wrist-watch that is not electric, check the winding. Automatic winding points to 910121. Any other winding points to 910129.

A stop-watch function does not change the wrist-watch codes. They apply whether or not the watch has one.

Duty and GST rates differ from country to country. Check the national tariff of the market you ship to. If you are unsure which code fits, try the HS code classifier.

HS 9101 vs 9102 and other Chapter 91 headings

The most common question is the difference between 9101 and 9102. The answer is the case. Heading 9102 takes the other watches, such as those with a case of base metal or plastic.

What about a gold plated watch? It depends on whether the case counts as metal clad with precious metal. That is a classification decision. Check the legal notes of the tariff or ask your customs authority before you file.

Parts and add-ons have their own headings. Movement sets and unfinished movements go to 9110. Other watch parts go to 9114. The chapter overview lists them all.
