HS Code 2306Oil-cake and other solid residues; whether or not ground or in the form of pellets, resulting from the extraction of vegetable or microbial fats or oils, other than those of heading no. 2304 or 2305
8 six-digit codes · Heading 6 of 9 in Chapter 23 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 2306 is the customs heading for oil-cake, the solid material left after oil is taken from seeds or nuts. Some countries call it HSN code 2306.
No heading in Chapter 23 is cut finer than 2306. Its 8 six-digit codes, 230610 to 230690, are the most any single heading in the chapter carries — “Oil-cake and other solid residues; whether or not ground or in the form of pellets, resulting from the extraction of vegetable or microbial fats or oils, other than those of heading no. 2304 or 2305” is where this chapter gets specific. The heading is number 6 of 9 in Chapter 23, Food industries, residues and wastes thereof; prepared animal fodder, which runs to 23 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 2306 covers
Oil-cake is what remains when seeds are pressed or treated to remove their oil. It is a dry, solid residue. It can be traded as a block, ground into oilcake meal, or pressed into pellets. Buyers also call it expeller cake.
Much of this material is used as animal feed, so you will see it described as animal feed residues. Customs, however, sorts it by the oil it came from, not by how it is used.
The heading comes with a limit. It leaves out the residues that have their own headings, 2304 and 2305. Everything else from oil extraction falls here.
HS 2306 subheadings by oilseed
Each six-digit code is named for the seed or nut that the oil came from. To choose a code, find the source of the oil first. Then match it to one of these short names.
- 230610: cotton seed oil-cake
- 230620: linseed oil-cake
- 230630: sunflower seed oil-cake
- 230641: low erucic acid rape or colza oil-cake, often sold as canola meal
- 230649: other rape seed oil-cake
- 230650: coconut or copra cake
- 230660: palm nuts or kernels cake, known as palm kernel cake
- 230690: oil-cake from other oils not named above
2306 vs 2304 and 2305: choosing the right heading
The three oil-cake headings split by the source of the oil. Heading 2304 is for soya-bean oil residues. Heading 2305 is for ground-nut oil residues. Heading 2306 is for residues from other oils.
So soybean meal does not go under 2306, and groundnut cake does not either.
Rapeseed meal needs one more check. If the seed is a low erucic acid type, the code is 230641. This is the group usually called canola. Other rape seed goes to 230649. If you are unsure which type you have, ask your supplier for the seed details.
Some feed materials are not oil residues at all. Plant waste and by-products used in animal feeding that are not named elsewhere go under heading 2308. Ready-made feed mixes go under heading 2309. Bran and milling residues from grain go under heading 2302.
