HS Code 7612Aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes etc (including rigid, collapsible tubular containers), for materials other than compressed, liquefied gas, 300l capacity or less, lined, heat-insulated or not
2 six-digit codes · Heading 12 of 16 in Chapter 76 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 7612 covers aluminium containers that hold up to 300 litres, from drums and cans to squeezable tubes. This page shows how to pick the right code and what falls outside it.
Heading 7612 splits exactly two ways. Goods answering to “Aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes etc (including rigid, collapsible tubular containers), for materials other than compressed, liquefied gas, 300l capacity or less, lined, heat-insulated or not” classify either at 761210 or at 761290, and the wording in the table below is the whole of what separates them. The heading is number 12 of 16 in Chapter 76, Aluminium and articles thereof, which runs to 35 six-digit codes in all.
Six-digit codes under heading 7612
| HS Code | Import–export description |
|---|---|
| 761210 | Aluminium; collapsible tubular containers, for any material, (not compressed or liquefied gas), 300l capacity or less, whether or not lined, not fitted with mechanical/thermal equipment |
| 761290 | Aluminium; casks, drums, cans, boxes and the like for any material (not compressed or liquefied gas), 300l capacity or less, whether or not lined or heat-insulated, no mechanical or thermal equipment |
What heading 7612 covers
Heading 7612 is for aluminium containers that hold goods. Picture drums for liquids, cans for paint or food, and tubes for creams or gels. Rigid shapes and collapsible shapes both fit. Some people search for it as HSN code 7612, but it is the same heading.
Three tests decide if a container belongs here. First, it must hold 300 litres or less. Second, it must not be made for compressed or liquefied gas. Third, it must have no mechanical or thermal equipment fitted to it. A lining is allowed. Heat insulation is allowed too.
The goods inside do not change the code. The shape, the size and the material of the container do. A drum of paint and a drum of syrup are treated the same way if the drum is the same kind. Customs officers look at the container first and the cargo second.
761210 vs 761290: which code fits?
The heading splits in two, and the split is about shape. Ask one simple question: does the container fold or flatten as you empty it? If it does, it is a tube, and the answer is 761210. If it keeps its form, the answer is 761290.
Neither code depends on what is packed inside. A tube of ointment and a tube of glue both go to the same place. A rigid drum of oil and a rigid box of tools go to the other.
If you are unsure, write down the shape, the capacity and the use of the container. Then check those three facts against the table above. The HS code classifier can also help you test your product.
- 761210: the tube type that collapses.
- 761290: the rigid type that holds its form, such as a drum, can, cask or box.
What does heading 7612 not include?
Many aluminium containers look close to this heading but belong elsewhere. Size and purpose decide where they go. Check each point below before you file a declaration.
A tank, vat or reservoir bigger than 300 litres moves up to heading 7611. This is the main difference between HS code 7611 and 7612. Gas is the second dividing line. Vessels built for compressed or liquefied gas sit in heading 7613, even when they are small.
Household items are another trap. A pot, a pan or a kitchen tool is not packaging, so it goes to heading 7615. Anything that fits no named heading in the chapter ends up in heading 7616. Thin foil has its own home as well.
- Over 300 litres: see HS 7611 for aluminium tanks.
- Gas containers: see HS 7613.
- Table, kitchen and other household articles: see HS 7615.
- Other aluminium articles not named elsewhere: see HS 7616.
- Thin aluminium foil: see HS 7607.
