HS Code 7216Iron or non-alloy steel, angles, shapes and sections

12 six-digit codes · Heading 16 of 29 in Chapter 72 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

Three things pick the right code: the letter shape, the height and the finish.

Heading 7216 is finely cut: 12 six-digit codes, 721610 to 721699, all of them under “Iron or non-alloy steel, angles, shapes and sections”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 16 of 29 in Chapter 72, Iron and steel, which runs to 167 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 7216 covers

Think of a steel beam, a channel or an angle bracket. Each has a fixed cross-section that looks like a letter. Customs calls these angles, shapes and sections. They are long bars, cut and sold by length.

This heading holds plain steel only. If alloying elements were added on purpose, the goods go to another heading in Chapter 72. Stainless and alloy versions are covered further down.

Some countries call the same code an HSN code. HSN code 7216 shares its first four digits with the HS code.

HS 7216 six-digit codes: U, I, H, L and T sections by height

The first split is height. The line is drawn at 80mm. Below that line, U, I and H sections share one code. From 80mm up, each shape gets its own code.

For hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded goods, the map looks like this:

  • U, I or H sections under 80mm high: 721610
  • L sections (angles) under 80mm: 721621
  • T sections under 80mm: 721622
  • U sections (channels) from 80mm up: 721631
  • I sections from 80mm up: 721632
  • H sections from 80mm up: 721633
  • L or T sections from 80mm up: 721640

Hot-rolled vs cold-formed steel sections

The second split is how the section was made. Hot-rolled means the steel was shaped while very hot. Cold-formed or cold-finished means it was shaped without heat, often to get a tighter finish.

Code 721650 is for hot-worked goods that fit none of the named shapes above. The cold-formed codes depend on the starting material. Flat-rolled products are flat sheet or strip. If the section was made from them, use 721661. If it was made some other way, use 721669.

Codes 721691 and 721699 take shapes that are not named elsewhere in the heading. Use 721691 when they were cold-formed from flat-rolled products. Treat 721699 as the last stop, so rule out the others first.

A flat sheet or coil is not a section. For hot-rolled flat steel, look at heading 7208 instead.

Related headings: bars, stainless and alloy steel shapes

Some goods look like 7216 products but belong next door. Plain round or square bars and rods sit in 7214 and 7215. Wire sits in 7217.

Sections made of stainless steel go to 7222. Alloy steel bars, shapes and sections go to 7228. The steel grade tells you which heading to open, so check it before the shape.
