HS Code 6805Abrasive powder or grain; natural or artificial, on a base of textile material, of paper, paperboard or of other material, whether or not cut to shape or sewn or otherwise made up
3 six-digit codes · Heading 5 of 15 in Chapter 68 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 6805 is for abrasive grain or powder fixed onto a flexible backing, such as sandpaper or abrasive cloth. The backing decides which of the three subheadings you use.
“Abrasive powder or grain; natural or artificial, on a base of textile material, of paper, paperboard or of other material, whether or not cut to shape or sewn or otherwise made up” divides three ways under heading 6805 — 680510, 680520 and 680530. Each carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 5 of 15 in Chapter 68, Stone, plaster, cement, asbestos, mica or similar materials; articles thereof, which runs to 50 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 6805 covers
HS heading 6805 sits in the Harmonized System, the shared list that customs offices use to name goods. It covers abrasive powder or grain, natural or artificial, that is attached to a base. Traders often call these goods coated abrasives. Common examples are abrasive paper, sandpaper and abrasive cloth.
The grain does the cutting or polishing. The base holds the grain in place and lets the product bend, wrap or be cut to size. The heading also takes goods that are cut to a shape, sewn or otherwise made up. You may also see it written as HSN code 6805.
The key test is simple. If the abrasive grain is stuck on a base, think of 6805. If the abrasive is shaped into a solid tool with no base, look elsewhere in Chapter 68.
HS 6805 subheadings: 680510, 680520 and 680530
The three subheadings differ in one way only. They split by what the abrasive grain is fixed on. Here is each one in plain words.
- This is textile-backed abrasive, often called abrasive cloth.
- This is the group that holds abrasive paper and sandpaper.
- Use it when the backing is neither woven textile fabric nor paper.
How to choose the right 6805 code
Start with the backing, not the grain. The grain can be natural or artificial, and both are treated the same way. Only the base changes the code.
Turn the product over and look at what the grain is stuck to. If it is woven textile fabric and nothing else, choose 680510. If it is paper or paperboard and nothing else, choose 680520. If it is any other material, or a mix that fits neither of those, choose 680530.
The word "only" matters in the first two codes. A product with a mixed or unusual backing may not fit them. Check the exact customs wording before you file. If you are unsure, the HS code classifier can help you narrow the choice.
HS 6805 vs nearby headings 6804, 6813 and 6815
Many wrong filings come from mixing 6805 with its neighbours. The difference is usually the shape and the job of the product.
Heading 6804 is for solid grinding tools: millstones, grindstones and grinding wheels without frames, plus their parts. The abrasive is shaped into the tool itself. That is the short answer to the difference between HS 6804 and 6805.
Heading 6813 is for friction material, such as pads, discs and segments for brakes and clutches. It is made to grip and slow things down, not to grind or polish. Heading 6815 is a catch-all for stone and mineral articles not named anywhere else, including carbon fibre articles and peat articles. Check it only after the more specific headings have been ruled out.
