What HS code 6802 covers
Think of stone that a worker has cut, shaped or finished so it can go into a building or a monument. Marble slabs, granite panels and carved pieces of building stone are typical examples. The stone must be natural. Man-made stone is not welcome here.
Slate is the big exception. The only time slate shows up under 6802 is in mosaic cubes and in coloured granules made from natural stone.
The heading sits in Section XIII, which groups articles of stone, ceramic and glass. Paving items such as setts, curbstones and flagstones are kept out and go elsewhere.
How to choose the right 6802 code
Ask three questions in order. Each answer narrows the choice until one subheading is left.
First, how big is the piece? If its biggest face fits inside a square with sides under 7cm, go straight to 680210. That code also takes coloured granules, chippings and powder, so small natural stone mosaic pieces usually belong there.
Second, how much work has the stone had? Plain cutting or sawing that leaves a flat or even surface is one group. Anything done beyond that, such as carving or shaping, is the other group.
Third, what is the stone? Marble, travertine and alabaster travel together. Granite has its own line. Other limestone-type stone is called calcareous stone. Everything else falls into a catch-all line.
- Cut or sawn flat: 680221 for marble, travertine and alabaster; 680223 for granite; 680229 for other building stone
- Worked further: 680291 for marble, travertine and alabaster; 680292 for calcareous stone; 680293 for granite; 680299 for any other natural stone
- Small pieces, granules, chippings and powder: 680210
6802 vs nearby headings
Stone goods look alike, so buyers often pick the wrong heading. These quick contrasts help.
Heading 6801 is for paving pieces: setts, curbstones and flagstones. If your goods are slabs, panels or other shaped stone, stay with 6802.
Check the stone first. If it is slate and not a mosaic cube or granule, move to 6803.
Heading 6810 covers cement, concrete and artificial stone. If a human mixed it and poured it, it is not natural stone, so 6802 does not apply.
Heading 6815 is a catch-all for stone or mineral articles named nowhere else. Try 6802 first, and use 6815 only when nothing here fits. The HS code classifier can help if you are still stuck.
