HS Code 6203Suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches and shorts (other than swimwear); men's or boys' (not knitted or crocheted)

14 six-digit codes · Heading 3 of 17 in Chapter 62 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

It also takes in ensembles, overalls, breeches and shorts, but not swimwear.

Heading 6203 is finely cut: 14 six-digit codes, 620311 to 620349, all of them under “Suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches and shorts (other than swimwear); men's or boys' (not knitted or crocheted)”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 3 of 17 in Chapter 62, Apparel and clothing accessories; not knitted or crocheted, which runs to 104 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 6203 covers

Heading 6203 is for clothes worn by men and boys. Think of a two-piece suit, a matching set, a blazer, work trousers or a pair of shorts. Bib and brace overalls and breeches are in here too.

Every item must be woven. Woven cloth is made by crossing threads on a loom. Knitted or crocheted clothes are made by looping yarn, so they fall outside Chapter 62 and belong with the knitted apparel chapter. That is why the words "not knitted or crocheted" sit on every code line.

You may also see this written as HSN code 6203. HSN is the name many traders use for the same system, and the code is the same. The six-digit subheadings are shared worldwide, and each country may add its own extra digits after them.

How to choose the right 6203 code

The subheadings are built in two layers. You choose the garment first and the main fibre second.

Work through it like this:

  • Pick the garment: suits, ensembles, jackets and blazers, or trousers and shorts. Each group has its own set of codes.
  • Pick the main fibre. Ensembles can be cotton or synthetic fibres. Jackets and blazers and trousers also have a cotton line. Suits have no cotton line, and ensembles have no wool line.
  • Use the "other" line last. Codes 620319, 620329 and 620339 take materials not named in the lines above them. Code 620349 takes trousers and shorts made of anything other than wool, fine animal hair, cotton or synthetic fibres.

Examples: men's cotton trousers, synthetic suits and blazers

A men's suit made of synthetic fibres goes under 620312.

For men's blazers, look at the jackets and blazers group. If the fibre is something else, the last line in that group applies.

When two lines seem to fit, the exact wording of the code decides. If you are unsure, try the HS code classifier.

6203 vs nearby headings

Several close headings in Chapter 62 get mixed up with this one. Ask what the garment is and who wears it.

  • They go under 6204, which also covers dresses and skirts.
  • That heading says it excludes the items of 6203, so a men's woven jacket or blazer stays here and a heavy outer coat goes there.
  • Men's underpants, pyjamas and bathrobes go under 6207.
