What products are classified under heading 6201?
Think of the coat a man or boy wears over everything else in cold or wet weather. Men's overcoats, raincoats and anoraks are the usual examples. Ski-jackets and wind-cheaters belong here too, and so do wind-jackets.
The words "not knitted or crocheted" matter. They tell you the cloth is woven, with threads crossing at right angles. A coat made from looped, knitted yarn is classified in the knitted apparel chapter of the Harmonized System. Always check how the fabric was made before you choose a code.
Some buyers search for this as an HSN code. The idea is the same: start with the four-digit heading, then move to a six-digit code for tariff classification.
HS code 6201 by fibre: which six-digit code to use
Once you know the item is a woven men's or boys' coat, the fibre decides the code. Check the fabric label or the supplier's specification sheet. Style does not change the answer. Capes, cloaks and car-coats follow the same rule as a plain overcoat.
- 620120: coats of wool or fine animal hair, such as a wool overcoat.
- 620130: coats of cotton, such as a men's cotton jacket that is not knitted.
- 620140: coats of man-made fibres, such as a man-made fibre anorak.
- 620190: coats of any other textile material.
6201 vs 6202 and 6203: picking the right heading
Two questions sort most cases. Is the wearer male or female? Is the item a coat, or is it a suit or tailored jacket?
The wording of this heading says it leaves out anything that belongs in 6203. That heading takes men's suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches and shorts. So a blazer goes to 6203, while an overcoat stays with 6201. The same kind of coat made for women and girls goes to 6202.
What 6201 does not include
Use this list to rule out the wrong heading before you file or search records:
- Women's or girls' coats and anoraks: heading 6202.
- Garments made of fabrics of heading 5602, 5603, 5903, 5906 or 5907: heading 6210.
