What HS code 2705 covers

They are made from solid fuels such as coal. The main names are coal gas, water gas and producer gas. Other gases of the same kind fit here too. The heading is part of the Harmonized System, a naming scheme run by the World Customs Organization. Customs offices use it to sort goods that cross borders.

Some traders say HSN code 2705. It is the same heading, written in the style used in India.

The heading sits in Chapter 27, which is about mineral fuels and oils. Within that chapter, 2705 is the place for gases that come from solid fuels. Gases that come from petroleum are placed elsewhere, as the next sections show.

HS code 2705 tariff classification and the single code 270500

Heading 2705 has just one code below it: 270500. When a gas fits the heading, that is the code you use. There is no list of sub-codes to choose from.

Check the exact tariff line with your customs broker. A country may add its own digits after the HS code. The duty or tax on a shipment is set by that country, not by the HS code alone. This page does not list rates.

HS 2705 vs 2711 petroleum gases and other Chapter 27 headings

The most common mix-up is with heading 2711. Heading 2705 excludes them in its own wording. So ask one question: where does the gas come from? A gas made from coal or another solid fuel points to 2705. A gas taken from petroleum, or another gaseous hydrocarbon, points to 2711.

A fuel gas can look the same on paper whatever its source. The invoice should say how it was made. Words such as coal gas, water gas or producer gas make the case clear. A vague term like fuel gas does not, so ask the seller for details.

Other nearby headings are easy to confuse with 2705 because they all deal with coal products:

  • 2701 is for coal itself and for solid fuels made from coal.
  • 2704 is for coke and semi-coke, the solid fuel left after coal, lignite or peat is heated.
  • 2716 is for electrical energy. Power has its own heading and is not a gas.
