What HS code 0101 covers

Heading 0101 is where customs places live equine animals. Think of horses, donkeys, mules and hinnies that are alive when they cross a border. The official wording calls donkeys asses.

Only living animals fit here. Horse meat, hides and feed are different goods and sit in other parts of the tariff. Some traders write this as the HSN code 0101. The number is the same. The Harmonized System is one shared naming scheme, so the first four digits mean the same thing in many countries.

Goods are grouped by what the animal is, then by what it is used for. This matters because a customs form asks for a six-digit code, not only the four-digit heading.

How to choose the right 0101 code

Start with the animal, then check its papers. The last two digits show which kind of animal you ship.

Are pure-bred breeding horses classified differently from other horses? Yes. Code 010121 is for horses that are both pure-bred and kept for breeding. Code 010129 is for all other live horses, such as riding, work or sport animals. If a horse misses either test, it goes under 010129.

Keep registration or studbook papers with the shipment. Your customs office decides what proof it accepts, so ask it before you file.

Donkeys use 010130. Mules and hinnies share 010190, and they never go under a horse code.

How to classify a mixed lot of horses and asses

The codes are written by animal type. So a mixed lot is not one line on your paperwork. Each type gets its own code.

Put the horses under a horse code, and run the breeding check for each group. Put donkeys under 010130. Write each group on its own line with its own head count.

If you cannot tell which code fits an animal, try the HS code classifier. Your customs broker can also confirm the answer.

Related headings in Chapter 01

If your animal is not an equine animal, it belongs to a neighbouring heading. This short guide shows what is not in 0101.

Check the animal first and the heading second. A pig, a goat or a chicken is never an equine animal, even if it travels in the same truck or on the same ship.
