Chapter 94 Furniture; bedding, mattresses, mattress supports, cushions and similar stuffed furnishings; lamps and lighting fittings, n.e.c.; illuminated signs, illuminated name-plates and the like; prefabricated buildings

6 headings · 54 six-digit codes · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 94 furniture covers seats, other furniture, mattresses and bedding, lamps, illuminated signs and prefabricated buildings. Which code fits depends on what the item is first, then what it is made of.

Chapter 94 is one of the more finely subdivided chapters: 6 headings carry 54 six-digit codes between them, an average of 9.0 per heading. The deepest is 9401 (Seats (not those of heading no. 9402), whether or not convertible into beds and parts…) with 16. The chapter sits in Section XX, Miscellaneous Manufactured Articles, alongside 2 other chapters.

What does HS code 94 furniture cover?

Chapter 94 groups goods made for sitting, sleeping, working and lighting a room. It also holds buildings that arrive in pieces and are put together on site. Seats, medical chairs and other furniture each get their own heading. Bedding, lamps and signs, and prefabricated buildings take the rest.

The codes come from the Harmonized System. That means the first six digits are the same in most countries. Some traders search for HSN code 94 instead. It points to the same chapter. Use the heading list above to jump to the part you need, or try the HS code classifier if you are unsure.

Seats vs other furniture: 9401 or 9403?

Start with one question: is the item a seat? If yes, look at heading 9401. If it is any other piece of furniture, look at heading 9403, which is the catch-all for furniture not named elsewhere in the chapter.

Medical and grooming furniture is the exception. Heading 9402 holds dentists' and barbers' chairs, such as 940210. It also holds operating tables and hospital beds, such as 940290. Seats from those groups do not go in 9401.

Frame material changes the code. Inside 9401, a seat with a wooden frame has one code if it is upholstered (940161) and another if it is not (940169). Metal frames work the same way, with 940171 for upholstered and 940179 for plain. So a wooden-frame upholstered sofa or chair belongs in 940161. Other 9401 codes cover aircraft seats, car seats, bamboo and rattan seats, and seats that turn into beds.

Wooden furniture is split into office, kitchen, bedroom and everything else. Plastic, bamboo, rattan and cane furniture have their own lines.

What is the HS code for mattresses and LED ceiling lights?

Heading 9404 covers mattress supports and bedding that is stuffed or fitted with springs. A mattress of cellular rubber or plastics goes in 940421. A mattress of any other material goes in 940429. The same heading also holds sleeping bags, quilts, duvets, cushions, pouffes and pillows.

Heading 9405 covers lamps, light fittings, searchlights, spotlights and illuminated signs. The key split is the light source. Chandeliers and electric ceiling or wall fittings built only for LED sources go in 940511. A matching code covers fittings for other light sources. Table, desk, bedside and floor lamps follow the same LED or not-LED pattern.

Some lighting has its own lines. Christmas tree light strings are listed apart from other fittings. Solar-powered LED fittings have their own code. Electric fittings made for LED use fall under 940542. Non-electric lamps and illuminated name-plates and signs are listed separately too.

How are furniture and lighting parts classified?

Parts usually stay with the product they belong to. Seat parts sit in 9401, split by material, as in 940191 for wood. Furniture parts sit in 9403, and 940399 covers parts made of anything other than wood. Lamp parts sit in 9405 and are split by material: glass, plastics, or other materials.

Prefabricated buildings have their own heading, 9406. It has one code for wooden buildings, one for modular steel building units, and one for prefabricated buildings not made of wood.
