What HS Code 93 covers

This chapter is about things made to fire, fight or defend. That includes weapons of war, handguns, sporting guns, air guns, ammunition, spare parts and bladed arms. Goods are sorted by what they are and who uses them.

Some countries call it HSN code 93. The first six digits are the same everywhere, because the World Customs Organization sets them. Each country may add extra digits after that for its own needs.

A few headings sound alike. The next sections show how to tell them apart. Each heading page lists its own six-digit codes, so open the one you need.

How to choose the right Chapter 93 code

Ask four questions in order. Is the item a whole weapon, a part, ammunition or a blade? The answer points you to the right area of the chapter.

If it is a whole weapon, ask what it is built for. A weapon made for armed forces belongs in 9301. A handgun that fires with powder belongs in 9302. A sporting, hunting or target gun with a long barrel belongs in 9303. A gun that works with a spring, air or gas belongs in 9304.

If it is a part or an accessory, match it to the weapon it fits. Parts are never filed with the whole weapon. They have their own heading, 9305, and the code depends on the weapon type.

If it is ammunition, go to 9306. This heading also holds bombs, mines, torpedoes and missiles, so it is not only for bullets and shells.

If it is a blade, such as a sword or a bayonet, go to 9307. Scabbards and sheaths go with it.

When you are still unsure, try the HS code classifier. Then confirm the final code with your customs broker, because each country applies the rules in its own way.

Common mix-ups between headings

The biggest trap is the air pistol. It looks like a pistol, but the wording of 9302 leaves out anything covered by 9303 or 9304. A pistol that runs on air, gas or a spring therefore goes to 9304, not 9302.

Another trap is the muzzle-loader. People expect it with the military items or the handguns. It actually sits with sporting guns in 9303, together with devices that fire flares or blank rounds.

A third trap is the kit. If a shipment holds a rifle and its spare parts, the parts may need their own line under 9305. Check how your customs office wants mixed boxes declared.

Last, remember that the military heading is a catch-all for weapons of war. It leaves out handguns and blades, so those never belong there.
