HS Code 8802Aircraft n.e.c. in heading no. 8801, except unmanned aircraft of heading 8806, (e.g. helicopters, aeroplanes); spacecraft (including satellites) and suborbital and spacecraft launch vehicles

6 six-digit codes · Heading 2 of 6 in Chapter 88 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

This page explains what it covers, how its subheadings are split, and how to tell it apart from nearby headings.

The WCO writes heading 8802 as a residual bucket: goods of Chapter 88that answer to “Aircraft n.e.c. in heading no. 8801, except unmanned aircraft of heading 8806, (e.g. helicopters, aeroplanes); spacecraft (including satellites) and suborbital and spacecraft launch vehicles” and that no more specific heading in the chapter already claims. It still carries 6 six-digit codes, 880211 through 880260, so “other” is not the end of the classification here. The heading is number 2 of 6 in Chapter 88, Aircraft, spacecraft, and parts thereof, which runs to 26 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 8802 covers

Heading 8802 is the main home for powered aircraft with a crew on board. It also covers spacecraft, including satellites, and suborbital and spacecraft launch vehicles. Some traders also search for it as HSN code 8802. The code is the same.

The heading is written as a list of exclusions and examples. It takes other aircraft that are not balloons or gliders. It leaves out unmanned aircraft. Helicopters and aeroplanes are the two everyday examples.

The code does not look at who uses the machine. A military aircraft and a civil aircraft of the same type and weight can fall under the same subheading. The six-digit subheadings 880211-880260 split goods by type and unladen weight, not by use.

HS 8802 subheadings: helicopters, aeroplanes and spacecraft

Unladen weight means the weight of the aircraft empty, without crew, fuel or cargo. The heading uses it to sort helicopters and aeroplanes into bands. Here is the split in plain words.

  • 880211: helicopters of 2000kg or less.
  • 880212: helicopters above 2000kg.
  • Weight does not matter here.

How to pick the right 8802 code

Start with the type of machine. If it is a helicopter, the choice is between 880211 and 880212. If it is an aeroplane or another powered aircraft, move on to the weight bands.

Next, check the unladen weight on the maker's papers. Under 2000kg points to 880220.

If the item is a satellite or a launch vehicle, use 880260. If you are unsure, the HS code classifier can help you test a product description before you file.

8802 vs 8801, 8806 and 8807

Three nearby headings cause most mix-ups. Each one answers a different question.

If the aircraft has no engine, look there first.

This is the answer to the common search for an HS code for 8802 unmanned aircraft: the heading says so in its own wording.

Parts are not in 8802 either. A whole helicopter is 8802. A part for that helicopter is 8807.
