HS Code 8711Motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, with or without side-cars; side-cars
7 six-digit codes · Heading 11 of 16 in Chapter 87 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
You choose the right subheading by engine type and engine size.
Heading 8711 is finely cut: 7 six-digit codes, 871110 to 871190, all of them under “Motorcycles (including mopeds) and cycles; fitted with an auxiliary motor, with or without side-cars; side-cars”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 11 of 16 in Chapter 87, Vehicles; other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof, which runs to 98 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 8711 covers
Side-cars are in the same heading. This is true whether a side-car ships with a motorcycle or on its own.
Many traders call this the HSN code 8711. It is the same heading. It sits in Chapter 87 vehicles, so it is a separate group from cars, trucks and tractors.
The full legal text is long and the subheadings repeat most of it. The plain labels below make the split easier to read.
HS 8711 subheadings by engine capacity
Five subheadings are for motorcycles with an internal combustion piston engine. The only thing that separates them is cylinder capacity, written as cc. Cylinder capacity is the engine size. A higher cc number means a bigger engine.
Each band starts where the one before it ends:
- 871110: engine up to 50cc. This is where a moped under 50cc goes.
- 871120: over 50cc, up to 250cc.
- 871130: over 250cc, up to 500cc.
- 871140: over 500cc, up to 800cc.
- 871150: over 800cc.
Electric motorcycles and other cycles: 871160 and 871190
If you are looking for the HS code for an electric motorcycle, start here. The same code applies to e-bikes that fit the heading wording, which is a cycle fitted with an auxiliary motor.
Subheading 871190 is the catch-all. It is for goods in heading 8711 that do not fit any of the other six codes. Use it last, only after you have ruled out the engine bands and the electric code.
Side-cars are named in every subheading. A side-car sold alone is classified by the same engine or motor wording as the code you pick.
How to choose the right 8711 code
Follow these steps in order. They keep you from picking a code that looks close but is wrong.
First, check how the vehicle is moved. If it has an electric motor for propulsion, look at 871160. If it has a piston engine, go to the cc bands. Second, find the cylinder capacity on the engine plate or the spec sheet, and match it to one band. Third, if nothing fits, check 871190.
Then check that the product belongs in heading 8711 at all:
- Pedal cycles with no motor are not here. They go to HS 8712 bicycles, not motorised.
- Parts and accessories for motorcycles are not here. They go to HS 8714 motorcycle and cycle parts.
- Carriages for people with disabilities go to HS 8713.
- Cars and other vehicles for carrying people go to HS 8703 motor cars.
