How do I find the correct HS code for my vehicle under Chapter 87?

Start with the job the vehicle does. A vehicle built mainly to carry people goes to 8703, unless it is public transport for 10 or more persons, which goes to 8702. A vehicle built to carry goods goes to 8704.

Next, look at the engine. Within 8703, petrol cars are split by engine size. For example, 870321 is for engines up to 1000cc. Diesel cars have their own size bands. Within 8704, weight decides the code. 870421 is for diesel goods vehicles up to 5 tonnes, and 870423 is for those over 20 tonnes. Tractors in 8701 are split by engine power. 870191 covers up to 18kW and 870195 covers over 130kW.

Then check what you are shipping. A chassis fitted with an engine belongs to 8706. A body or cab belongs to 8707. A whole truck, a bare chassis and a cab are three different cases.

HS codes for electric and hybrid vehicles

Propulsion type is a key split in this chapter. Fully electric vehicles have their own codes in several headings. 870380 is for cars with only an electric motor. 870460 is for goods vehicles with only an electric motor. 870240 is for public transport vehicles with only an electric motor. 870124 is for road tractors with only electric motors. 871160 is for motorcycles with an electric motor.

Hybrid vehicles are split further. In 8703, the codes 870340 to 870370 separate petrol from diesel. They also separate cars that can be charged by plugging in from cars that cannot. HS code 87 vehicle parts and accessories

Heading 8708 is the main home for vehicle parts and accessories. It covers bumpers, safety seat belts, windscreens, brakes, gear boxes, axles, road wheels, suspension, radiators, exhaust pipes, clutches, steering parts and safety airbags. Parts not named elsewhere in the heading fall into its last code.

Heading 8714 covers parts for motorcycles, cycles and carriages for disabled persons. That includes cycle frames, forks, wheel rims, hubs, brakes, saddles and pedals. Trailer parts sit in 8716, with the trailers themselves.
