HS Code 8547Insulating fittings; for electrical machines, appliances, equipment, excluding insulators of heading no. 8546, electrical conduit tubing and joints therefore
3 six-digit codes · Heading 46 of 48 in Chapter 85 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System
HS code 8547 is the customs heading for fittings made only of insulating material and used in electrical machines, appliances and equipment. This page explains the three codes, how to choose between them, and where to find shipment records.
“Insulating fittings; for electrical machines, appliances, equipment, excluding insulators of heading no. 8546, electrical conduit tubing and joints therefore” divides three ways under heading 8547 — 854710, 854720 and 854790. Each carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 46 of 48 in Chapter 85, Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers; television image and sound recorders and reproducers, parts and accessories of such articles, which runs to 296 six-digit codes in all.
Six-digit codes under heading 8547
| HS Code | Import–export description |
|---|---|
| 854710 | Insulating fittings; of ceramics, for electrical machines, of insulating material only (except minor assembly parts), excluding those of heading no. 8546 |
| 854720 | Insulating fittings; of plastics, for electrical machines, of insulating material only (except minor assembly parts), excluding those of heading no. 8546 |
| 854790 | Insulating fittings; (other than of ceramics or plastics), for electrical machines, appliances and equipment, excluding insulators of heading no. 8546 |
What heading 8547 covers
Heading 8547 is for insulating fittings. These are parts made of insulating material that go into electrical machines, appliances and equipment. The heading name also mentions electrical conduit tubing and the joints that go with it.
The key word is "fitting". A fitting helps hold, shape or protect an electrical item. It is not the same thing as an insulator. Insulators have their own heading, 8546, and 8547 leaves them out on purpose.
Some countries call this heading HSN code 8547. The Harmonized System classification itself is the same worldwide up to four digits.
Which six-digit code fits: ceramic, plastic or other
The three codes under this heading are split by material. Look at what the fitting is made of, then match it.
- Ceramic fittings: use 854710.
- Plastic fittings: use 854720.
- Any other material: use 854790.
- The first two need fittings made of insulating material only. Small assembly parts are the one allowed exception.
- 854790 is the catch-all for fittings that are neither ceramic nor plastic.
Difference between HS 8546 and 8547
Many mistakes happen here, so keep the rule short. An insulator goes to HS 8546 electrical insulators, which is for insulators of any material. A fitting that insulates part of a machine or appliance goes to 8547.
Other nearby headings can look close. Wire and cable with an insulating cover belong in HS 8544 insulated wire and cable. A part not named anywhere else in the chapter may fit HS 8548 electrical parts n.e.s. Parts for switchgear and control panels are covered by HS 8538 parts for switching apparatus.
Switches, plugs and sockets are a different story. Look at HS 8536 switching and connecting apparatus for those.
How to choose the right HS code for insulating fittings
Work through these questions in order. Stop at the first clear answer.
First, is the product an insulator? Then use 8546. Second, is it wire or cable? Then use 8544. Third, is it made for an electrical machine, appliance or equipment? Fourth, check the material and pick the matching code from the list above.
Still unsure? Run the product name through the HS code classifier. Duties differ from one country to another, so check the rules of the country you ship to before you file.

HS Code 8547: common questions
What does heading 8547 cover?
It covers fittings of insulating material for electrical equipment, plus electrical conduit tubing and joints. Plain insulators are not part of it.
What is the HS code for plastic insulating fittings?
Plastic ones go under 854720. The fitting must be insulating material only, apart from small assembly parts.
What is the HS code for ceramic insulating fittings?
Ceramic ones go under 854710. The same insulating-material-only rule applies.
What is the difference between HS 8546 and 8547?
Heading 8546 is titled electrical insulators of any material. Heading 8547 is for fittings and expressly excludes those insulators.
How many subheadings are under HS heading 8547?
There are three six-digit codes, split by the material of the fitting.
What does HSN code 8547 cover?
HSN is a local name for the same four-digit heading, so it covers the same goods. Countries add extra digits after the shared part.
