HS Code 7002Glass in balls (other than microspheres of heading no. 7018), rods or tubes, unworked

5 six-digit codes · Heading 2 of 19 in Chapter 70 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 7002 covers raw glass shaped as balls, rods or tubes, before any cutting, grinding or decorating. The tube codes split by material, so the right choice depends on what the glass is made of.

Goods answering to “Glass in balls (other than microspheres of heading no. 7018), rods or tubes, unworked” split into 5 six-digit codes, 700210 through 700239. Each one carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 2 of 19 in Chapter 70, Glass and glassware, which runs to 71 six-digit codes in all.

HS CodeImport–export description
700210Glass; unworked, in balls (other than microspheres of heading no. 7018)

700239Glass; unworked, in tubes, other than of glass having a linear coefficient of expansion not exceeding 5 x 10 (to the minus 6, (or 0.000005) ) per kelvin within a temperature range of 0-300 degrees c, not fused quartz or other fused silica

What HS code 7002 covers

Heading 7002 is for glass that has been formed into a simple shape but not yet worked into a finished product. The shapes are balls, rods and tubes. Think of a long glass rod or a length of plain glass tubing that a factory will later cut, heat and shape.

The word “unworked” matters. Once glass is bent, ground, engraved, coloured or turned into a finished item, it usually moves to another heading. The heading sits in Section XIII, Articles of Stone, Ceramic and Glass, under Chapter 70, Glass and glassware.

Some buyers and forwarders search for HSN code 7002 or HTS code 7002. These are the same product group. The first four digits are shared, and national systems add their own digits after that.

HS 7002 code structure

The Harmonized System from the World Customs Organization is built in levels. Each level narrows the goods down.

A trade record usually carries the six-digit code, so that is the level to get right.

  • Chapter 70 (the first two digits) covers glass and glassware.
  • Heading 7002 (four digits) names balls, rods and tubes of unworked glass.
  • Subheadings 700210 to 700239 (six digits) split the heading by shape and by tube material.

How to confirm the correct HS code for glass tubing

Work through the questions in this order. First, look at the shape. A ball goes to 700210. A rod goes to 700220. A tube needs one more step.

For a tube, check the material. Fused quartz tubes are the clearest case, because the material is named in the code.

If the tube is not fused quartz or silica, check the linear coefficient of expansion. This number says how much the glass grows when heated. If it does not exceed 5 x 10 to the minus 6 per kelvin between 0 and 300 degrees C, the tube is low expansion glass and goes to 700232. Borosilicate glass tubing is often sold as this kind of glass, but the test is the measured expansion value, not the trade name.

Ask your supplier for the material data sheet before you pick a code. If you are still unsure, the HS code classifier can help you narrow the choice.

Difference between HS 7002 and 7018 glass microspheres

Heading 7002 balls exclude microspheres. Glass microspheres that do not exceed 1 mm in diameter belong to heading 7018, along with glass beads and imitation pearls. A glass ball that is larger than that, and unworked, stays in 7002.

Other neighbours are easy to mix up. Laboratory, hygienic and pharmaceutical glassware belongs in heading 7017, even when it starts life as a tube. Glass envelopes and tubes for lamps, open and without fittings, belong in heading 7011. Glass in the mass, such as cullet and scrap, belongs in heading 7001. Glass fibres and glass wool go to heading 7019.

If the glass has been made into a tool, a container or a part, it has probably left 7002.

HS Code 7002: common questions

What is HS code 7002?

HS code 7002 is the heading for glass in balls, rods or tubes that has not been worked. It is part of Chapter 70, Glass and glassware, in Section XIII.

What is the HS code for glass tubes?

Unworked glass tubes fall under 700231, 700232 or 700239. The choice depends on the material and on the linear coefficient of expansion of the glass.

What is the HS code for fused quartz tubes?

Unworked tubes of fused quartz or other fused silica are classified under 700231.

What is the HS code for glass rods?

Unworked glass rods are classified under 700220.

Are glass microspheres classified under 7002?

No. Heading 7002 excludes microspheres of heading 7018. Heading 7018 covers glass microspheres not exceeding 1 mm in diameter.

Is the HS code for glass rods the same across countries?

The first six digits come from the Harmonized System and are shared by member countries, so glass rods are 700220 in the common system. Countries may add extra digits for their own use, so check the national tariff before you ship.
