HS code 5509 covers spun yarn made from synthetic staple fibres such as polyester, nylon and acrylic. It does not cover sewing thread or yarn packed for retail.
Heading 5509 is finely cut: 18 six-digit codes, 550911 to 550999, all of them under “Yarn (other than sewing thread) of synthetic staple fibres, not put up for retail sale”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 9 of 16 in Chapter 55, Man-made staple fibres, which runs to 110 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 5509 covers
Staple fibres are short lengths of fibre. Mills twist them together into a long strand, which is why this product is also called spun yarn. Polyester, nylon and acrylic are the main fibres you will meet here.
The heading belongs to Chapter 55, Man-made staple fibres, inside the textiles section of the Harmonized System. Two limits apply. The yarn must not be sewing thread, and it must not be packed for sale to consumers. Some traders call this the HSN code 5509, but it is the same number. It is the first step of customs classification. The six-digit subheadings then sort the yarn by fibre, by structure and by blend.

The full wording of each code is in the list on this page. This short map groups the codes by fibre, so you can find polyester staple yarn, acrylic staple yarn or nylon staple yarn quickly. Modacrylic yarn sits with acrylic.

How to choose the right 5509 subcode
Work through four questions in order. Each one removes some of the codes.
First, check that the product is yarn and not sewing thread, and that it is sold in bulk, not in small retail packs. If it fails either test, it is outside 5509.
Second, look at the fibre content. If no single fibre reaches that level, you have a blend, so look at the codes from 550951 onward.
Third, check the structure. Single yarn takes the first code of each pair. Multiple (folded) or cabled yarn takes the second.
Fourth, for blends, name the partner fibre. A polyester viscose yarn mixes polyester with an artificial fibre, so it fits 550951. Polyester with wool goes to 550952. If you are still unsure, try the HS code classifier.
5509 vs 5508, 5510 and 5511
Four neighbouring headings are easy to confuse with 5509. Check these before you settle on a code.
- 5509 is for synthetic fibres. This is the main split between the two.
- Yarn in small retail packs moves out of 5509.
- 5506 is synthetic staple fibre that has been carded or combed, but not yet spun. It is a fibre, not a yarn.
