HS Code 9029Revolution counter, production counters, taximeters, mileometers, pedometers and the like, speed indicators and tachometers, other than those of heading no. 9015, stroboscopes

3 six-digit codes · Heading 28 of 32 in Chapter 90 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 9029 is the customs heading for devices that count turns, trips and steps, and for gauges that show speed. This page explains what fits, what does not, and how to choose the right code for tariff classification.

“Revolution counter, production counters, taximeters, mileometers, pedometers and the like, speed indicators and tachometers, other than those of heading no. 9015, stroboscopes” divides three ways under heading 9029 — 902910, 902920 and 902990. Each carries its own customs description, and the exact wording below is what a classification has to match. The heading is number 28 of 32 in Chapter 90, Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories, which runs to 143 six-digit codes in all.

What HS code 9029 covers

Heading 9029 groups simple counting and speed-showing instruments. A revolution counter tells you how many times a shaft has turned. A production counter tallies items made on a line. A taximeter shows the fare for a trip. A mileometer shows distance travelled. A pedometer counts steps.

The heading also takes speed indicators and tachometers. A tachometer shows how fast an engine or shaft is spinning. Stroboscopes sit here too. They are lamps that flash at set rates so that a moving part looks still.

In some countries the same heading is called HSN code 9029. The numbers are the same. Only the extra digits after the sixth can differ from one country to the next.

These goods belong to the wider group of Chapter 90 measuring instruments. Most items in that chapter measure, check or test something. Heading 9029 is the place for counters and speed gauges that are not named in a more specific heading.

Which 9029 code fits your product

Pick the six-digit code by asking what the item does. Then check whether you are shipping the whole device or only a part.

  • 902910: the counters. Use it for a revolution counter, a production counter, a taximeter, a mileometer or a pedometer.
  • 902920: the speed gauges. Use it for a speed indicator, a tachometer or a stroboscope. People who ask for the HS code for a tachometer, a speed indicator or a stroboscope land here.
  • 902990: the parts and accessories. Use it for pieces made for the counters and gauges above, such as housings or dials built for them.

What heading 9029 excludes

The heading text says it applies to speed indicators and tachometers other than those of heading 9015. That is the main exclusion. A speed or counting device built into one of those instruments follows 9015 and not 9029. Compare the two in HS 9015 surveying and meteorological instruments.

Other near neighbours are easy to mix up. Heading 9026 is for instruments that measure or check the flow, level or pressure of liquids and gases. Heading 9030 is for instruments that measure electrical quantities and radiation. Heading 9031 takes measuring and checking machines that are not named elsewhere in the chapter.

Parts need care too. Heading 9033 covers parts and accessories of Chapter 90 that are not named elsewhere. Parts made for the counters and gauges of 9029 have their own code, 902990, so they stay in this heading.

Duty rates are set by each importing country, so they are not listed here. Use the HS code classifier to test your product, and check the live records to see how others declare similar goods.
