HS Code 8504Electric transformers, static converters (e.g. rectifiers) and inductors

11 six-digit codes · Heading 4 of 48 in Chapter 85 · World Customs Organization Harmonized System

HS code 8504, also written as HSN code 8504, is where trade classifies equipment that changes or conditions electric power. Use this page to choose the right six-digit code by product type, insulating liquid and kVA size.

Heading 8504 is finely cut: 11 six-digit codes, 850410 to 850490, all of them under “Electric transformers, static converters (e.g. rectifiers) and inductors”. At that depth it is the exact wording of the code, not of the heading, that settles a classification. The heading is number 4 of 48 in Chapter 85, Electrical machinery and equipment and parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers; television image and sound recorders and reproducers, parts and accessories of such articles, which runs to 296 six-digit codes in all.

HS code 8504 product classification: what it covers

This heading groups transformers, static converters such as rectifiers, inductors and ballasts for discharge lamps. It also holds parts for these goods.

Tariff classification is easier as a short set of questions. Ask them in this order and you will land on one code.

  • What is the product? Ballasts go to 850410. Static converters go to 850440. Inductors go to 850450. Parts go to 850490. Transformers need two more questions.
  • Is the transformer built with a liquid dielectric? If yes, the choice is 850421, 850422 or 850423. If no, it belongs to the other group, 850431 to 850434.
  • What is its power handling capacity? Read the kVA rating on the nameplate or invoice and match it to the band for that group.

Liquid dielectric vs other transformers

A liquid dielectric transformer uses an insulating liquid. The tariff gives these their own three codes. Every other transformer is covered by a second set of four codes. Both sets split by size, so the kVA rating decides the final code.

Each band includes its upper limit. A transformer rated at exactly 16kVA goes in 850432, because that band runs up to and including 16kVA. If you search for other transformers of 1 to 16 kVA, 850432 is the code to read.

  • 850421: liquid dielectric, not exceeding 650kVA
  • 850422: liquid dielectric, above 650kVA and up to the top band limit
  • 850423: liquid dielectric, above that top band limit
  • 850431: other transformers, not exceeding 1kVA
  • 850432: other transformers, above 1kVA and up to 16kVA
  • 850433: other transformers, above 16kVA and up to 500kVA
  • 850434: other transformers, above 500kVA

8504 vs related headings in Chapter 85

Most mistakes come from look-alike headings in electrical machinery. These are the usual ones to check.

Rotary converters are not here. They belong to heading 8502, which covers generating sets and rotary converters. Only static converters, the kind with no rotating machine inside, go to 850440. Motors and generators sit in 8501, and parts made for them sit in 8503.

Ballasts and lamps are split too. The lamp itself is in 8539, which covers electric filament and discharge lamps, including LED light sources.

Two more headings can catch you out. Semiconductor devices such as diodes and transistors are in 8541. Switching and protecting apparatus for voltages above 1000 volts is in 8535. If an electrical part fits no heading in the chapter, 8548 is the catch-all for electrical parts not specified elsewhere.

HS 8504 import export data

A code tells you what a product is. Shipment records tell you who moves it. EximDataX gives you the second part for every code on this page.

EximDataX shows shipment-level import and export records from official customs sources. Coverage: 43 direct customs feeds plus 184 mirror-derived countries. Named buyers and named suppliers are available in 38 of the 43 direct markets. Most markets refresh weekly and some refresh daily.

HS Code 8504: common questions

What is HS code 8504?

It is the four-digit customs heading for power-conditioning equipment: transformers, rectifier-type converters and inductors.

Is HSN code 8504 the same as the HS version?

Yes for the first six digits, which are shared worldwide. Countries add their own extra digits after that, so use the HS code classifier for national tariff lines.

What is the difference between 850421 to 850423 and 850431 to 850434?

The first group is for liquid dielectric transformers. The second group is for other transformers. In both groups the kVA rating picks the final code.

Are ballasts for discharge lamps classified under this heading?

Yes, they sit in 850410. The lamps themselves are in heading 8539.

Can one shipment involve more than one HSN 8504 sub-code?

Yes. If a shipment holds different items, such as a small transformer and a rectifier, each item is classified by its own wording and may carry a different code.

How can I find importers and exporters for these goods?

Open the import data and export data pages and look up 8504. The buyer data and supplier data pages explain the named company information that is available.
