What HS code 0406 covers

Customs offices use it for tariff classification when cheese crosses a border. You may also see it written as HSN code 0406. It is the same number.

The heading is split into five six-digit subheadings. The split depends on the type of cheese. Is it fresh? Is it grated or powdered? Is it processed? Does it have blue veins? Each answer points to a different code.

Importers and exporters need the exact six-digit code on their paperwork. A wrong code can cause delays at the border and makes your records hard to compare with other traders.

How to choose the right cheese HS code

Work down this list in order. Stop at the first line that fits your product.

Here is what each code means in plain words:

  • 040610: fresh cheese, including whey cheese, that is not fermented, and curd.
  • 040620: any cheese that is grated or powdered.
  • It must not be grated, powdered or processed.
  • 040690: all other cheese that is not grated, powdered or processed and is not named above.

Edge cases when classifying cheese

Form comes first. If a cheese is grated or powdered, 040620 applies, whatever the type. A blue cheese that is grated therefore goes to 040620, not 040640. The blue-veined code only covers cheese that is not grated, powdered or processed.

Processed cheese has its own code, 040630, but only when it is not grated or powdered. Cheese that fits none of the named groups falls to 040690. Think of it as the catch-all for the heading.

If your product is hard to place, try the HS code classifier. Check the final choice against the rules of the country you ship to.

Cheese vs other dairy headings in Chapter 04

Chapter 04 holds many dairy products, and each has its own heading. Cheese and curd sit in 0406. Other dairy goods do not.

Plain milk and cream are in heading 0401. Concentrated milk and cream, or those with added sugar, are in heading 0402. Whey is in heading 0404.

Be careful with the word curd. Curd that is cheese-like belongs in 040610. Curdled milk and cream, as a fermented or acidified drink or food, belong in 0403. When in doubt, read the full description of each heading.
