Chapter 97 is for things people collect, display or keep for their artistic, historic or scientific value. It is not for goods made to be used or sold in bulk. Customs classification here depends on what the item is, how it was made and how old it is.
The chapter forms all of Section XXI of the Harmonized System. Some traders search for it as HSN code 97, but it is the same chapter.

- 9701: paintings, drawings and pastels made completely by hand. Collages, mosaics and similar decorative plaques are here too. Hand-decorated factory-made articles are not.
How to pick the right chapter 97 code
Age is the main tool. Many headings split in two: one code for older pieces and one for newer ones. The cut-off is 100 years. A hand-made painting older than a century goes to 970121. A newer one goes to 970191. Original prints split the same way (970210 and 970290), as do sculptures (970310 and 970390).
Coin collections follow the same cut. Use 970531 for pieces older than a century and 970539 for the rest. Collections of zoological, botanical or similar interest have their own codes under 9705.
Antiques in 9706 have two age bands. Use 970610 for pieces above 250 years. Use 970690 for pieces between 100 and 250 years.
Watch the exclusions. Drawings of heading 4906 are left out of 9701. Stamps of heading 4907 are left out of 9704. Mass-printed copies do not belong in 9702. If an item still does not fit, try the HS code classifier, then read the heading page for the full wording.
